प्राप्तः स्वर्गफलं चैव तम् उवाच पितामहः ॥
निर्वृतं शान्तमनसं वचोभिस् तर्पयन्न् इव ॥
चतुष्पादस् त्वया धर्मश् चितो लोक्येन कर्मणा ॥
अक्षयस् तव लोको ऽयं कीर्तिश् चैवाक्षया दिवि ॥
पुनस् तवाद्य राजर्षे सुकृतेनेह कर्मणा ॥
आवृतं तमसा चेतः सर्वेषां स्वर्गवासिनाम् ॥
येन त्वां नाभिजानन्ति ततो ऽज्ञात्वासि पातितः ॥
प्रीत्यैव चासि दौहित्रैस् तारितस् त्वम् इहागतः ॥
स्थानं च प्रतिपन्नो ऽसि कर्मणा स्वेन निर्जितम् ॥
अचलं शाश्वतं पुण्यम् उत्तमं ध्रुवम् अव्ययम् ॥
ययातिर् उवाच
भगवन् संशयो मे ऽस्ति कश् चित् तं छेत्तुम् अर्हसि ॥
न ह्य् अन्यम् अहम् अर्हामि प्रष्टुं लोकपितामह ॥
prāptaḥ svargaphalaṃ caiva tam uvāca pitāmahaḥ ||
nirvṛtaṃ śāntamanasaṃ vacobhis tarpayann iva ||
catuṣpādas tvayā dharmaś cito lokyena karmaṇā ||
akṣayas tava loko 'yaṃ kīrtiś caivākṣayā divi ||
punas tavādya rājarṣe sukṛteneha karmaṇā ||
āvṛtaṃ tamasā cetaḥ sarveṣāṃ svargavāsinām ||
yena tvāṃ nābhijānanti tato 'jñātvāsi pātitaḥ ||
prītyaiva cāsi dauhitrais tāritas tvam ihāgataḥ ||
sthānaṃ ca pratipanno 'si karmaṇā svena nirjitam ||
acalaṃ śāśvataṃ puṇyam uttamaṃ dhruvam avyayam ||
yayātir uvāca
bhagavan saṃśayo me 'sti kaś cit taṃ chettum arhasi ||
na hy anyam aham arhāmi praṣṭuṃ lokapitāmaha ||
'When he had attained the fruit of heaven, the Forefather addressed him, at peace and with a calmed mind, as though satisfying him with words: "The four-footed dharma has been accumulated by you through deeds worthy of the world. This world of yours is imperishable, and your fame in heaven is imperishable too, O royal sage, once again through the good deed done here. The consciousness of all the dwellers of heaven was covered by darkness, and so they did not recognize you; because of this failure to recognize you, you were cast down. But out of love you were saved by your daughter's sons and have come here; you have again obtained the place won by your own deed — immovable, eternal, pure, supreme, enduring, and inexhaustible." Yayāti said: "O venerable one, I have a doubt; you are worthy to dispel it. For I cannot rightly ask anyone else, O Forefather of the worlds."'

The Forefather explains that Yayāti has again obtained a stable place, though the cause of his fall still calls for reflection. The heavenly dwellers failed to recognize him because of darkness, yet his rescue came through the love of his daughter's sons. Dharma is shown here to be enduring only when it is free of pride.
