नावमान्यास् त्वया राजन्न् अवरोत्कृष्टमध्यमाः ॥
न हि मानप्रदग्धानां कश् चिद् अस्ति समः क्व चित् ॥
पतनारोहणम् इदं कथयिष्यन्ति ये नराः ॥
विषमाण्य् अपि ते प्राप्तास् तरिष्यन्ति न संशयः ॥
नारद उवाच
एष दोषो ऽभिमानेन पुरा प्राप्तो ययातिना ॥
निर्बन्धतश् चातिमात्रं गालवेन महीपते ॥
श्रोतव्यं हितकामानां सुहृदां भूतिम् इच्छताम् ॥
न कर्तव्यो हि निर्बन्धो निर्बन्धो हि क्षयोदयः ॥
तस्मात् त्वम् अपि गान्धारे मानं क्रोधं च वर्जय ॥
संधत्स्व पाण्डवैर् वीर संरम्भं त्यज पार्थिव ॥
nāvamānyās tvayā rājann avarotkṛṣṭamadhyamāḥ ||
na hi mānapradagdhānāṃ kaś cid asti samaḥ kva cit ||
patanārohaṇam idaṃ kathayiṣyanti ye narāḥ ||
viṣamāṇy api te prāptās tariṣyanti na saṃśayaḥ ||
nārada uvāca
eṣa doṣo 'bhimānena purā prāpto yayātinā ||
nirbandhataś cātimātraṃ gālavena mahīpate ||
śrotavyaṃ hitakāmānāṃ suhṛdāṃ bhūtim icchatām ||
na kartavyo hi nirbandho nirbandho hi kṣayodayaḥ ||
tasmāt tvam api gāndhāre mānaṃ krodhaṃ ca varjaya ||
saṃdhatsva pāṇḍavair vīra saṃrambhaṃ tyaja pārthiva ||
'"You must not despise the lowest, the highest, or the middling, O king. For those burned by pride, there is no equal to be found anywhere. Those people who will tell of this fall and rise will, even should they meet with hardship, surely cross beyond it, without doubt." Nārada said: "Such was the fault that Yayāti once incurred through pride, and through the excessive, insistent persistence of Gālava, O lord of the earth. One must heed friends who wish one well and desire one's welfare. One should not act with stubborn insistence, for insistence brings both rise and ruin. Therefore you too, O son of Gāndhārī, abandon pride and anger. Make peace with the Pāṇḍavas, O hero; abandon your fury, O lord of the earth."'
