अपारे भव नः पारम् अप्लवे भव नः प्लवः ॥
कुरुष्व स्थानम् अस्थाने मृतान् संजीवयस्व नः ॥
सर्वे ते शत्रवः सह्या न चेज् जीवितुम् इच्छसि ॥
अथ चेद् ईदृशीं वृत्तिं क्लीबाम् अभ्युपपद्यसे ॥
निर्विण्णात्मा हतमना मुञ्चैतां पापजीविकाम् ॥
एकशत्रुवधेनैव शूरो गच्छति विश्रुतिम् ॥
इन्द्रो वृत्रवधेनैव महेन्द्रः समपद्यत ॥
माहेन्द्रं च ग्रहं लेभे लोकानां चेश्वरो ऽभवत् ॥
नाम विश्राव्य वा संख्ये शत्रून् आहूय दंशितान् ॥
सेनाग्रं वापि विद्राव्य हत्वा वा पुरुषं वरम् ॥

sarve te śatravaḥ sahyā na cej jīvitum icchasi ||
atha ced īdṛśīṃ vṛttiṃ klībām abhyupapadyase ||
nirviṇṇātmā hatamanā muñcaitāṃ pāpajīvikām ||
ekaśatruvadhenaiva śūro gacchati viśrutim ||
indro vṛtravadhenaiva mahendraḥ samapadyata ||
māhendraṃ ca grahaṃ lebhe lokānāṃ ceśvaro 'bhavat ||
nāma viśrāvya vā saṃkhye śatrūn āhūya daṃśitān ||
senāgraṃ vāpi vidrāvya hatvā vā puruṣaṃ varam ||
‘In the boundless, be our shore; without a raft, be our raft; make a foothold where there is none, and restore us to life as though we were dead. All your enemies are bearable, if you do not wish to live; but if you accept such a powerless existence, then, despairing in spirit and broken in mind, abandon this sinful way of life. By the defeat of a single enemy alone a hero attains renown. Indra became Mahendra precisely through the slaying of Vritra, obtained Indra’s rank, and became lord of the worlds. By making his name heard in battle, by challenging armed enemies, by routing the vanguard of an army, or by slaying the foremost of men, a hero attains glory.’
