'When in battle you see the white-horsed hero with Krishna as his charioteer, wielding the weapon of Indra as well as the weapons of Agni and the Maruts, and hear the roar of Gandiva like a peal of thunder, then it will be neither Treta, nor Krita, nor Dvapara. When in battle you see Kunti's son Yudhishthira, accompanied by mantras and fire offerings, guarding his great army, unassailable as the sun, scorching the enemy host, then it will be neither Treta, nor Krita, nor Dvapara. When in battle you see mighty Bhimasena, drinking Duhshasana's blood and dancing in the fray...'

Krishna receives Karna's refusal without outward anger, yet at once unveils the inevitability of the Pandavas' victory. His words weave together the signs of destiny, the strength of Arjuna, the righteousness of Yudhishthira, and the grim fate awaiting the warriors: the war is already appointed as an event in which each side will reap the fruit of its choice.
