भीष्म उवाच
एवम् एतन् महाबाहो यथा वदसि भारत ॥
यथैव हि भवन्तो मे तथैव मम पाण्डवाः ॥
अपि चैव मय श्रेयो वाच्यं तेषां नराधिप ॥
योद्धव्यं तु तवार्थाय यथा स समयः कृतः ॥
न तु पश्यामि योद्धारम् आत्मनः सदृशं भुवि ॥
ऋते तस्मान् नरव्याघ्रात् कुन्तीपुत्राद् धनंजयात् ॥
स हि वेद महाबाहुर् दिव्यान्य् अस्त्राणि सर्वशः ॥
न तु मां विवृतो युद्धे जातु युध्येत पाण्डवः ॥
अहं स च क्षणेनैव निर्मनुष्यम् इदं जगत् ॥
कुर्यां शस्त्रबलेनैव ससुरासुरराक्षसम् ॥

api caiva maya śreyo vācyaṃ teṣāṃ narādhipa ||

na tu paśyāmi yoddhāram ātmanaḥ sadṛśaṃ bhuvi ||
ṛte tasmān naravyāghrāt kuntīputrād dhanaṃjayāt ||
sa hi veda mahābāhur divyāny astrāṇi sarvaśaḥ ||
na tu māṃ vivṛto yuddhe jātu yudhyeta pāṇḍavaḥ ||
ahaṃ sa ca kṣaṇenaiva nirmanuṣyam idaṃ jagat ||
kuryāṃ śastrabalenaiva sasurāsurarākṣasam ||
Bhishma said: "It is so, O mighty-armed one, as you say, O Bharata. Just as you are dear to me, so too are the Pandavas dear to me. And yet, O lord of men, I must speak what will be for their good; but I shall fight for your sake, as the condition was made. I see no warrior on earth equal to myself, except that tiger among men, Dhananjaya, son of Kunti. That mighty-armed one knows all the divine weapons, but the Pandava will never fight me openly in battle. He and I, in a single moment, could by the force of arms render this world devoid of men, together with its gods, asuras and rakshasas.

Bhishma's answer reveals the tragic duality of his position: bound by duty to the throne, he does not renounce his knowledge of the truth or his attachment to the Pandavas. Bhishma's conditions, and Karna's refusal to fight under him, show that even within the vast Kaurava army, unity remains only superficial.
