These seven great bowmen, heroes who delighted in battle, Yudhishthira duly consecrated as leaders of the army. As commander-in-chief of the whole host he appointed Dhrishtadyumna, born from the blazing fire for the destruction of Drona. And over all these gathered great-souled leaders he set Gudakesha Dhananjaya as lord of the commanders. Arjuna's charioteer, holding the reins of his horses, was the glorious Janardana, younger brother of Sankarshana, great in intellect. Seeing that the war had arrived and a great calamity was close at hand, Halayudha entered the house of King Pandava.

The chapter contrasts two forms of faithfulness: the Pandavas organize their army under Krishna's guidance, while Balarama, equally bound to both Bhima and Duryodhana, chooses not to take part in the fratricidal war. His departure does not diminish the rightness of the Pandavas' cause, but it underscores the gravity of the moment: even one who accepts Keshava's will is not always able to watch the destruction of his own kin.
