'I stand as your helper in war, if you are afraid, O Pandava. In battle I shall render you help that your enemies cannot bear. For there is no man here equal to me in valor. Having slain the enemies in battle, I shall give them to you, O Phalguna.' When this was said in the presence of Dharmaraja and Keshava, in the hearing of the assembled kings and all the others, the wise son of Kunti, looking at Vasudeva and the Pandava Dharmaraja, answered with a smile, in a friendly manner: 'O hero, when I fought against the very mighty gandharvas during the ghosha-yatra, who then was my helper and friend?'

Rukmi arrives as an ally, but his speech reveals not service to dharma but self-assurance and a wish to display his own strength. Arjuna's answer is not empty pride: he reminds him that his support has already been proven in battle, and it consists not in some chance helper but in Krishna, in divine weapons, in his teachers, and in his own responsibility as a kshatriya. That is why both the Pandavas and Duryodhana are left without Rukmi: the war is purified of ostentatious support that carries no inner loyalty.
