Nakula he set against Ashvatthaman, Shaibya against Kritavarman, and Yuyudhana, the descendant of Vrishni, against the king of Sindhu. Shikhandin he placed in front against Bhishma, Sahadeva against Shakuni, Chekitana against Shala, Dhrishtaketu against Shalya, and Uttamaujas against Gautama Kripa. The sons of Draupadi he sent against the five Trigartas, and Subhadra's son Abhimanyu against Vrishasena and the remaining kings, for he deemed him capable of surpassing even Arjuna in battle. Having thus distributed these warriors, singly and in groups, the flame-hued great archer Dhrishtadyumna assigned himself his own share — Drona.

War is no longer discussed as a possibility: it takes the form of order, deployment, and personal responsibility. Dhrishtadyumna acts not haphazardly but in accordance with each warrior's strength, assigning each his opponent. It is especially significant that he takes Drona upon himself: born for the death of the teacher, he meets his destiny not as a personal whim but as part of the Pandavas' shared duty.
