ताश् चाप्य् उग्राश् चर्मणा वारयित्वा; खड्गेनाजौ पातिता मे नरेन्द्र ॥
बाणैर् दिव्यैर् जामदग्न्यस्य संख्ये; दिव्यांश् चाश्वान् अभ्यवर्षं ससूतान् ॥
निर्मुक्तानां पन्नगानां सरूपा; दृष्ट्वा शक्तीर् हेमचित्रा निकृत्ताः ॥
प्रादुश्चक्रे दिव्यम् अस्त्रं महात्मा; क्रोधाविष्टो हैहयेशप्रमाथी ॥
ततः श्रेण्यः शलभानाम् इवोग्राः; समापेतुर् विशिखानां प्रदीप्ताः ॥
समाचिनोच् चापि भृशं शरीरं; हयान् सूतं सरथं चैव मह्यम् ॥
रथः शरैर् मे निचितः सर्वतो ऽभूत्; तथा हयाः सारथिश् चैव राजन् ॥
युगं रथेषा च तथैव चक्रे; तथैवाक्षः शरकृत्तो ऽथ भग्नः ॥
ततस् तस्मिन् बाणवर्षे व्यतीते; शरौघेण प्रत्यवर्षं गुरुं तम् ॥
स विक्षतो मार्गणैर् ब्रह्मराशिर्; देहाद् अजस्रं मुमुचे भूरि रक्तम् ॥

sa vikṣato mārgaṇair brahmarāśir; dehād ajasraṃ mumuce bhūri raktam ||
These fierce spears I warded off with my shield, and in battle I struck them down with my sword, O lord of men. Then with divine arrows I showered in the fight Jamadagnya's divine horses together with his charioteer. Seeing his gold-adorned spears, resembling released serpents, cut down, the great-souled crusher of the lord of the Haihayas, overcome with anger, manifested a divine astra. Then brightly burning swarms of arrows, fierce as clouds of locusts, swooped down upon me; they thickly covered my body, my horses, my charioteer, and the whole chariot. My chariot was strewn with arrows on every side, as were my horses and charioteer, O king; the yoke, the chariot-pole, the wheel, and the axle itself were cut by arrows and broken. Then, when that rain of arrows had passed, I in turn showered my teacher with a torrent of arrows. Wounded by my arrows, that treasury of brahmanical power ceaselessly poured forth abundant blood from his body.

In this chapter the duel between Bhishma and Rama reaches its highest intensity: ordinary arrows give way to divine astras, spears, images of fire, and cosmic comparisons.
