Vaishampayana said: "Then, at clear dawn, urged on by the son of Dhritarashtra, the kings of Duryodhana's host set out against the Pandavas. Having bathed, pure, garlanded and dressed in white, weapons in hand, banners raised, having pronounced blessings and offered fire sacrifices, all of them were versed in the Vedas, were heroes, kept righteous vows, had performed the prescribed rites, and bore the marks of warriors. Mighty, single-minded and full of faith, desiring to win the highest worlds in battle, Vinda and Anuvinda of Avanti set out together with the Kekayas and the Bahlikas; all these hosts marched with the son of Bharadvaja at their head."

This chapter shows the material side of war: not only heroes and vows, but the vast organization of camps, rites, provisions and retinue. The Kaurava army moves like an entire city on the march: kings, peoples, artisans, singers, merchants and onlookers all enter the space of war. Duryodhana attends to order and provisioning, yet this very abundance of outward show underscores the scale of the catastrophe now approaching. Before the battle, dharma is already being tested -- not only on the field, but in how a ruler governs people, resources and allies.
