वैशंपायन उवाच
यथा युयुधिरे वीराः कुरुपाण्डवसोमकाः ॥
कुरुक्षेत्रे तपःक्षेत्रे शृणु तत् पृथिवीपते ॥
अवतीर्य कुरुक्षेत्रं पाण्डवाः सहसोमकाः ॥
कौरवान् अभ्यवर्तन्त जिगीषन्तो महाबलाः ॥
वेदाध्ययनसंपन्नाः सर्वे युद्धाभिनन्दिनः ॥
आशंसन्तो जयं युद्धे वधं वाभिमुखा रणे ॥
अभियाय च दुर्धर्षां धार्तराष्ट्रस्य वाहिनीम् ॥
प्राङ्मुखाः पश्चिमे भागे न्यविशन्त ससैनिकाः ॥

abhiyāya ca durdharṣāṃ dhārtarāṣṭrasya vāhinīm ||
prāṅmukhāḥ paścime bhāge nyaviśanta sasainikāḥ ||
Vaishampayana answered: "Listen, O lord of the earth, to how the heroes of the Kurus, the Pandavas, and the Somakas fought at Kurukshetra, the field of austerity. Having come to Kurukshetra, the mighty Pandavas, together with the Somakas, advanced against the Kauravas, desiring victory. All of them were versed in the Vedas and rejoiced in battle, hoping either to triumph in the fight or to meet death face to face. Approaching the formidable army of Dhritarashtra's son, they encamped with their soldiers in the western part of the field, facing east."

Vaishampayana at once calls Kurukshetra `tapaḥkṣetra` — a field of austerity. The war here is therefore more than a clash of armies: on this ground the trial of dharma unfolds. The Pandavas arrive not as reckless rebels but as warriors ready to accept either victory or death in open combat.
