Vaishampayana said: 'Having said this, the blessed great-grandsire of the Kurus spoke again to mighty-armed Dhritarashtra: "O great king, in this war a great destruction will come to pass: even now I perceive these terrible omens. Falcons, vultures, crows, and scavenging kites flock in great numbers to the edges of the forests and gather there. Rejoicing birds foresee an exceedingly fierce war; flesh-eating creatures will devour the flesh of elephants and horses. Ominous birds, crying with a harsh, dreadful cry and foreboding calamity, fly through the midst of the sky toward the southern quarter. O Bharata, I constantly see that at sunrise and sunset the sun is surrounded by headless trunks. At twilight, three-colored, lightning-flashing halos edged in white and red, with black necks, cover the sun. I have seen day and night without distinction, with the sun, moon, and stars ablaze; this bodes destruction for the warriors. On the full-moon night of Karttika the moon became indistinct, deprived of its radiance, and fire-colored against a uniformly hued sky."'

After granting the boon to Sanjaya, Vyasa unveils the outward language of fate: omens. They do not cancel human freedom, but they show that choices already made have borne a heavy fruit. Birds of prey rejoice at war, the heavenly bodies grow distorted, day and night blur together: the world loses its order because people have broken the order of dharma.
