देवनागरी
यः स शक्र इवाक्षोभ्यो वर्षन् बाणान् सहस्रशः ॥
जघान युधि योधानाम् अर्बुदं दशभिर् दिनैः ॥
स शेते निष्टनन् भूमौ वातरुग्ण इव द्रुमः ॥
तव दुर्मन्त्रिते राजन् यथा नार्हः स भारत ॥

He who, unshakeable like Shakra, raining down thousands of arrows, slew in ten days a vast multitude of warriors in battle, now lies upon the ground, groaning like a tree broken by the wind. Because of your ill counsel, O king, he has come to a fate he did not deserve, O Bharata."

The final verse names the cause directly: not any lack of valor in Bhishma, but Dhritarashtra's ill counsel that brought about this unworthy end. Sanjaya offers no comforting lie; he speaks the truth, because only truth can halt a further fall.
