श्वेतोष्णीषं श्वेतहयं श्वेतवर्माणम् अच्युतम् ॥
अपश्याम महाराज भीष्मं चन्द्रम् इवोदितम् ॥
हेमतालध्वजं भीष्मं राजते स्यन्दने स्थितम् ॥
श्वेताभ्र इव तीक्ष्णांशुं ददृशुः कुरुपाण्डवाः ॥
दृष्ट्वा चमूमुखे भीष्मं समकम्पन्त पाण्डवाः ॥
सृञ्जयाश् च महेष्वासा धृष्टद्युम्नपुरोगमाः ॥
जृम्भमाणं महासिंहं दृष्ट्वा क्षुद्रमृगा यथा ॥
धृष्टद्युम्नमुखाः सर्वे समुद्विविजिरे मुहुः ॥
एकादशैताः श्रीजुष्टा वाहिन्यस् तव भारत ॥
पाण्डवानां तथा सप्त महापुरुषपालिताः ॥
उन्मत्तमकरावर्तौ महाग्राहसमाकुलौ ॥
युगान्ते समुपेतौ द्वौ दृश्येते सागराव् इव ॥
नैव नस् तादृशो राजन् दृष्टपूर्वो न च श्रुतः ॥
अनीकानां समेतानां समवायस् तथाविधः ॥

hematāladhvajaṃ bhīṣmaṃ rājate syandane sthitam ||

dṛṣṭvā camūmukhe bhīṣmaṃ samakampanta pāṇḍavāḥ ||
sṛñjayāś ca maheṣvāsā dhṛṣṭadyumnapurogamāḥ ||
jṛmbhamāṇaṃ mahāsiṃhaṃ dṛṣṭvā kṣudramṛgā yathā ||
dhṛṣṭadyumnamukhāḥ sarve samudvivijire muhuḥ ||
ekādaśaitāḥ śrījuṣṭā vāhinyas tava bhārata ||
pāṇḍavānāṃ tathā sapta mahāpuruṣapālitāḥ ||
unmattamakarāvartau mahāgrāhasamākulau ||
yugānte samupetau dvau dṛśyete sāgarāv iva ||
naiva nas tādṛśo rājan dṛṣṭapūrvo na ca śrutaḥ ||
anīkānāṃ sametānāṃ samavāyas tathāvidhaḥ ||
O great king, we saw Bhishma — in a white turban, upon white horses, in white armor, unshaken, like a risen moon. The Kurus and Pandavas beheld Bhishma with his golden palm-tree banner, standing resplendent in his silver chariot, like a white cloud with piercing rays. Seeing Bhishma at the head of the army, the Pandavas trembled, and the great archers, the Srinjayas, led by Dhrishtadyumna, shuddered. As small creatures shudder again and again at the sight of a great roaring lion, so all of them, led by Dhrishtadyumna, trembled repeatedly. These eleven splendid armies of yours, O Bharata, and the seven armies of the Pandavas, guarded by great heroes, seemed like two oceans come together at the end of an age, full of frenzied crocodiles, whirlpools, and teeming with monstrous creatures. Never before, O king, have we seen or heard of the like — such a gathering together of assembled armies."
