अनीकमध्ये तिष्ठन्तं राजपुत्रं दुरासदम् ॥
अब्रवीद् भरतश्रेष्ठं गुडाकेशं जनार्दनः ॥
वासुदेव उवाच
य एष गोप्ता प्रतपन् बलस्थो; यो नः सेनां सिंह इवेक्षते च ॥
स एष भीष्मः कुरुवंशकेतुर्; येनाहृतास् त्रिंशतो वाजिमेधाः ॥
एतान्य् अनीकानि महानुभावं; गूहन्ति मेघा इव घर्मरश्मिम् ॥
एतानि हत्वा पुरुषप्रवीर; काङ्क्षस्व युद्धं भरतर्षभेण ॥

anīkamadhye tiṣṭhantaṃ rājaputraṃ durāsadam ||
abravīd bharataśreṣṭhaṃ guḍākeśaṃ janārdanaḥ ||
vāsudeva uvāca
ya eṣa goptā pratapan balastho; yo naḥ senāṃ siṃha ivekṣate ca ||
sa eṣa bhīṣmaḥ kuruvaṃśaketur; yenāhṛtās triṃśato vājimedhāḥ ||
etāny anīkāni mahānubhāvaṃ; gūhanti meghā iva gharmaraśmim ||
etāni hatvā puruṣapravīra; kāṅkṣasva yuddhaṃ bharatarṣabheṇa ||

वासुदेव उवाचvāsudeva uvācaVasudeva said; Krishna spoke
य एष गोप्ता प्रतपन्ya eṣa goptā pratapanthis protector, blazing; this guardian, burning fiercely
बलस्थोbalasthostanding firm in his strength; positioned amid his force
यो नः सेनांyo naḥ senāṃwho upon our army; who at our host
सिंह इवेक्षते चsiṃha ivekṣate cagazes as a lion does; surveys like a lion
स एष भीष्मःsa eṣa bhīṣmaḥit is he, Bhishma; he is Bhishma indeed
कुरुवंशकेतुर्kuruvaṃśaketurthe banner of the Kuru race; the standard of the Kuru lineage
येनाहृतास् त्रिंशतो वाजिमेधाःyenāhṛtās triṃśato vājimedhāḥby whom thirty horse-sacrifices were performed; who has accomplished thirty ashvamedhas
एतान्य् अनीकानिetāny anīkānithese armies; these battle ranks
महानुभावं गूहन्तिmahānubhāvaṃ gūhanticonceal the great and mighty one; hide the majestic soul
मेघा इव घर्मरश्मिम्meghā iva gharmaraśmimas clouds conceal the burning ray of the sun; as clouds hide the scorching sunbeam
एतानि हत्वाetāni hatvāhaving slain these; once you have struck these down
पुरुषप्रवीरpuruṣapravīraO foremost of men; O hero excellent among men
काङ्क्षस्व युद्धंkāṅkṣasva yuddhaṃseek battle; aspire to combat
भरतर्षभेणbharatarṣabheṇawith the bull among the Bharatas; with the best of the Bharatas
अनुवाद

Janardana said to Gudakesha, foremost of the Bharatas, the unassailable prince standing in the midst of the army: "This protector, blazing amid the host and gazing upon our army as a lion does — he is Bhishma, the banner of the Kuru race, by whom thirty horse-sacrifices were performed. These armies conceal this great soul, as clouds conceal the burning ray of the sun. Having slain them, O foremost of men, seek battle with this bull among the Bharatas."
