Shri Bhagavan said: "This is desire, this is anger, born of the guna of rajas; know it here as the enemy — a great devourer and a great sinner. As fire is covered by smoke, as a mirror by dust, and as an embryo is covered by its caul, so by this is knowledge covered. O son of Kunti, the knowledge of the wise is covered by this eternal enemy in the form of desire, insatiable as fire. The senses, the mind, and the buddhi are called its seat; through these it deludes the embodied one, having hidden his knowledge. Therefore, O best of the Bharatas, first restrain the senses, and cast off this sinful thing that destroys knowledge and realization. The senses are said to be powerful; higher than the senses is the mind, higher than the mind is the buddhi, and higher than the buddhi is he, the atman. Thus, having known that which is higher than the buddhi, and having steadied yourself by the self, O mighty-armed one, slay this hard-to-approach enemy in the form of desire."

The chapter closes with a practical hierarchy of the inner struggle: the senses, the mind, the buddhi, and the atman. Desire is overcome not through hatred of the body, but by restoring the right order, in which the intellect is subordinated to the spiritual self and directed toward Krishna.
