"Even food that is pleasing to everyone is of three kinds; sacrifice, austerity, and gift are likewise distinguished. Hear this distinction. Food that increases life, clarity, strength, health, happiness, and satisfaction, that is succulent, nourishing, firm, and pleasing to the heart, is dear to people of goodness. Bitter, sour, salty, excessively hot, pungent, dry, and burning food is loved by people of passion and brings pain, grief, and disease. Stale, tasteless, spoiled, unfresh food, along with leftovers and impure food, is dear to people of darkness."

Spiritual life concerns not only convictions but everyday choices as well. Food affects consciousness: pure and wholesome food sustains clarity, while stimulating or impure food strengthens passion and darkness.
