गतपूर्वाह्णभूयिष्ठे तस्मिन्न् अहनि दारुणे ॥
वर्तमाने महारौद्रे महावीरवरक्षये ॥
दुर्मुखः कृतवर्मा च कृपः शल्यो विविंशतिः ॥
भीष्मं जुगुपुर् आसाद्य तव पुत्रेण चोदिताः ॥
एतैर् अतिरथैर् गुप्तः पञ्चभिर् भरतर्षभ ॥
पाण्डवानाम् अनीकानि विजगाहे महारथः ॥
चेदिकाशिकरूषेषु पाञ्चालेषु च भारत ॥
भीष्मस्य बहुधा तालश् चरन् केतुर् अदृश्यत ॥
शिरांसि च तदा भीष्मो बाहूंश् चापि सहायुधान् ॥
निचकर्त महावेगैर् भल्लैः संनतपर्वभिः ॥
नृत्यतो रथमार्गेषु भीष्मस्य भरतर्षभ ॥
के चिद् आर्तस्वरं चक्रुर् नागा मर्मणि ताडिताः ॥

bhīṣmaṃ jugupur āsādya tava putreṇa coditāḥ ||
etair atirathair guptaḥ pañcabhir bharatarṣabha ||
pāṇḍavānām anīkāni vijagāhe mahārathaḥ ||
cedikāśikarūṣeṣu pāñcāleṣu ca bhārata ||
bhīṣmasya bahudhā tālaś caran ketur adṛśyata ||
śirāṃsi ca tadā bhīṣmo bāhūṃś cāpi sahāyudhān ||
nicakarta mahāvegair bhallaiḥ saṃnataparvabhiḥ ||
nṛtyato rathamārgeṣu bhīṣmasya bharatarṣabha ||
ke cid ārtasvaraṃ cakrur nāgā marmaṇi tāḍitāḥ ||

तस्मिन्न् अहनि दारुणेtasminn ahani dāruṇeon that terrible day; on that dreadful day
वर्तमाने महारौद्रेvartamāne mahāraudrewhen the great and gruesome went on; as the utterly grim continued
महावीरवरक्षयेmahāvīravarakṣayedestruction of the finest great heroes; the slaying of the noblest great warriors
दुर्मुखः कृतवर्मा चdurmukhaḥ kṛtavarmā caDurmukha and Kritavarman; Durmukha together with Kritavarman
कृपः शल्यो विविंशतिःkṛpaḥ śalyo viviṃśatiḥKripa, Shalya, Vivimshati; Kripa, Shalya, and Vivimshati
भीष्मं जुगुपुर् आसाद्यbhīṣmaṃ jugupur āsādyaguarded Bhishma, approaching him; having drawn near, protected Bhishma
तव पुत्रेण चोदिताःtava putreṇa coditāḥurged on by your son; at the bidding of your son
एतैर् अतिरथैर् गुप्तःetair atirathair guptaḥprotected by these atirathas; under the guard of these great charioteers
पञ्चभिर् भरतर्षभpañcabhir bharatarṣabhafive of them, O best of Bharata; the five, O bull among the Bharatas
पाण्डवानाम् अनीकानिpāṇḍavānām anīkānithe battle-ranks of the Pandavas; the armies of the sons of Pandu
विजगाहे महारथःvijagāhe mahārathaḥthe great charioteer penetrated; the mighty rathin entered
चेदिकाशिकरूषेषुcedikāśikarūṣeṣuamong the Chedis, Kashis, and Karushas; into the ranks of Chedi, Kashi, Karusha
पाञ्चालेषु च भारतpāñcāleṣu ca bhārataand among the Panchalas, O Bharata; and among the Panchalas, O Bharata
भीष्मस्य बहुधा तालःbhīṣmasya bahudhā tālaḥBhishma's palm-tree everywhere; Bhishma's palm-tree banner everywhere
चरन् केतुर् अदृश्यतcaran ketur adṛśyatathe moving standard was seen; the mobile banner was visible
शिरांसि च तदा भीष्मोśirāṃsi ca tadā bhīṣmoand then Bhishma heads; Bhishma then, heads
बाहूंश् च अपि सहायुधान्bāhūṃś ca api sahāyudhānand arms together with their weapons; and armed arms
निचकर्त महावेगैःnicakarta mahāvegaiḥhe lopped off with swift-flying; he cut down with very swift
भल्लैः संनतपर्वभिःbhallaiḥ saṃnataparvabhiḥbhalla-arrows with smooth joints; broad-headed arrows with even shafts
नृत्यतो रथमार्गेषुnṛtyato rathamārgeṣudancing on the paths of the chariots; moving as though in a dance along the chariot-lanes
भीष्मस्य भरतर्षभbhīṣmasya bharatarṣabhaof Bhishma, O best of Bharata; of Bhishma, O bull among the Bharatas
के चिद् आर्तस्वरम् चक्रुःke cid ārtasvaram cakruḥsome let out a cry of anguish; others raised a cry of pain
नागा मर्मणि ताडिताःnāgā marmaṇi tāḍitāḥelephants, struck in the vital spot; war-elephants, wounded in a vital part
अनुवाद

Sanjaya said: "When most of the morning of that terrible day had already passed, and the dreadful slaughter of the finest great heroes continued, Durmukha, Kritavarman, Kripa, Shalya, and Vivimshati, urged on by your son, came forward and set themselves to guard Bhishma. Protected by these five atirathas, the great charioteer entered the battle-ranks of the Pandavas, O best of the Bharatas. Among the Chedis, Kashis, Karushas, and Panchalas, O Bharata, Bhishma's moving palm-tree banner was seen everywhere. Then Bhishma, with swift, well-jointed bhalla-arrows, lopped off heads and arms together with their weapons. While Bhishma seemed to dance along the paths of the chariots, some of the elephants, struck in their vital parts, let out cries of anguish, O best of the Bharatas."
