रक्षार्थम् अभ्यधावन्त सौभद्रं त्वरिता रथैः ॥
विराटः सह पुत्रेण धृष्टद्युम्नश् च पार्षतः ॥
भीमश् च केकयाश् चैव सात्यकिश् च विशां पते ॥
जवेनापततां तेषां भीष्मः शांतनवो रणे ॥
पाञ्चाल्यं त्रिभिर् आनर्छत् सात्यकिं निशितैः शरैः ॥
पूर्णायतविसृष्टेन क्षुरेण निशितेन च ॥
ध्वजम् एकेन चिच्छेद भीमसेनस्य पत्रिणा ॥
जाम्बूनदमयः केतुः केसरी नरसत्तम ॥
पपात भीमसेनस्य भीष्मेण मथितो रथात् ॥
भीमसेनस् त्रिभिर् विद्ध्वा भीष्मं शांतनवं रणे ॥
कृपम् एकेन विव्याध कृतवर्माणम् अष्टभिः ॥

javenāpatatāṃ teṣāṃ bhīṣmaḥ śāṃtanavo raṇe ||
pāñcālyaṃ tribhir ānarchat sātyakiṃ niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ||
pūrṇāyatavisṛṣṭena kṣureṇa niśitena ca ||
dhvajam ekena ciccheda bhīmasenasya patriṇā ||
jāmbūnadamayaḥ ketuḥ kesarī narasattama ||
papāta bhīmasenasya bhīṣmeṇa mathito rathāt ||
bhīmasenas tribhir viddhvā bhīṣmaṃ śāṃtanavaṃ raṇe ||
kṛpam ekena vivyādha kṛtavarmāṇam aṣṭabhiḥ ||
Then ten great archers, the great charioteers of the Pandavas, rushed swiftly on their chariots to defend Saubhadra: Virata together with his son, Dhrishtadyumna, son of Prishata, Bhima, the Kekayas, and Satyaki, O lord of men. As they came on with such speed, Bhishma, son of Shantanu, in that battle struck the Panchala prince with three arrows and Satyaki with keen arrows. With a single sharp razor-arrow, loosed from his fully drawn bow, he severed Bhimasena's banner. The golden lion standard fell from Bhimasena's chariot, brought down by Bhishma, O best of men. Bhimasena, in return, pierced Bhishma, son of Shantanu, with three arrows in the battle, struck Kripa with one, and Kritavarman with eight."
