ततो व्यूढेष्व् अनीकेषु तावकेष्व् इतरेषु च ॥
धनंजयो रथानीकम् अवधीत् तव भारत ॥
शरैर् अतिरथो युद्धे पातयन् रथयूथपान् ॥
ते वध्यमानाः पार्थेन कालेनेव युगक्षये ॥
धार्तराष्ट्रा रणे यत्ताः पाण्डवान् प्रत्ययोधयन् ॥
प्रार्थयाना यशो दीप्तं मृत्युं कृत्वा निवर्तनम् ॥
एकाग्रमनसो भूत्वा पाण्डवानां वरूथिनीम् ॥
बभञ्जुर् बहुशो राजंस् ते चाभज्यन्त संयुगे ॥
द्रवद्भिर् अथ भग्नैश् च परिवर्तद्भिर् एव च ॥
पाण्डवैः कौरवैश् चैव न प्रज्ञायत किं चन ॥
उदतिष्ठद् रजो भौमं छादयानं दिवाकरम् ॥
दिशः प्रतिदिशो वापि तत्र जज्ञुः कथं चन ॥
अनुमानेन संज्ञाभिर् नामगोत्रैश् च संयुगे ॥
वर्तते स्म तदा युद्धं तत्र तत्र विशां पते ॥
न व्यूहो भिद्यते तत्र कौरवाणां कथं चन ॥
रक्षितः सत्यसंधेन भारद्वाजेन धीमता ॥
तथैव पाण्डवेयानां रक्षितः सव्यसाचिना ॥
नाभिध्यत महाव्यूहो भीमेन च सुरक्षितः ॥

babhañjur bahuśo rājaṃs te cābhajyanta saṃyuge ||
dravadbhir atha bhagnaiś ca parivartadbhir eva ca ||
pāṇḍavaiḥ kauravaiś caiva na prajñāyata kiṃ cana ||
udatiṣṭhad rajo bhaumaṃ chādayānaṃ divākaram ||
diśaḥ pratidiśo vāpi tatra jajñuḥ kathaṃ cana ||
anumānena saṃjñābhir nāmagotraiś ca saṃyuge ||
vartate sma tadā yuddhaṃ tatra tatra viśāṃ pate ||
na vyūho bhidyate tatra kauravāṇāṃ kathaṃ cana ||
rakṣitaḥ satyasaṃdhena bhāradvājena dhīmatā ||
tathaiva pāṇḍaveyānāṃ rakṣitaḥ savyasācinā ||
nābhidhyata mahāvyūho bhīmena ca surakṣitaḥ ||

शरैः अतिरथः युद्धेśaraiḥ atirathaḥ yuddhewith arrows, the atiratha, in battle; the great ratha-warrior, with arrows
पातयन् रथयूथपान्pātayan rathayūthapānfelling the leaders of the chariots; cutting down the chariot commanders
ते वध्यमानाः पार्थेनte vadhyamānāḥ pārthenathey, being slain by Partha; they, being struck down by Arjuna
कालेन इव युगक्षयेkālena iva yugakṣayeas by Time at the end of the yuga; as if by death at the destruction of the age

मृत्युम् कृत्वा निवर्तनम्mṛtyum kṛtvā nivartanammaking death their only retreat; regarding death as their sole withdrawal
एकाग्रमनसः भूत्वाekāgramanasaḥ bhūtvābecoming single-minded; having concentrated their minds
पाण्डवानाम् वरूथिनीम्pāṇḍavānām varūthinīmthe array of the Pandavas; the battle ranks of the sons of Pandu
बभञ्जुः बहुशः राजन्babhañjuḥ bahuśaḥ rājanbroke it repeatedly, O king; often breached it, O lord
ते च अभज्यन्त संयुगेte ca abhajyanta saṃyugeand they themselves were broken in battle; and they themselves were shattered
द्रवद्भिः अथ भग्नैः चdravadbhiḥ atha bhagnaiḥ caby those fleeing and broken; from the fleeing and shattered
परिवर्तद्भिः एव चparivartadbhiḥ eva caand those turning about as well; and those constantly wheeling around
पाण्डवैः कौरवैः च एवpāṇḍavaiḥ kauravaiḥ ca evaby the Pandavas and the Kauravas; by the sons of Pandu and Kuru
न प्रज्ञायत किं चनna prajñāyata kiṃ cananothing could be distinguished; nothing could be understood
उदतिष्ठत् रजः भौमम्udatiṣṭhat rajaḥ bhaumamdust rose from the earth; dust swirled up from the ground
छादयानम् दिवाकरम्chādayānam divākaramcovering the sun; veiling the daystar
दिशः प्रतिदिशः वा अपिdiśaḥ pratidiśaḥ vā apithe cardinal and intermediate directions; the directions and the directions between them
तत्र जज्ञुः कथं चनtatra jajñuḥ kathaṃ canathere people recognized things somehow; things were distinguished only vaguely
अनुमानेन संज्ञाभिःanumānena saṃjñābhiḥby guesswork and signs; by conjecture, by markers
नामगोत्रैः च संयुगेnāmagotraiḥ ca saṃyugeand by names and clans in battle; by names and lineages
वर्तते स्म तदा युद्धम्vartate sma tadā yuddhamthe battle then took place; thus the fighting continued
तत्र तत्र विशां पतेtatra tatra viśāṃ patehere and there, O lord of men; everywhere, O king
न व्यूहः भिद्यते तत्रna vyūhaḥ bhidyate tatrathe array was not broken there; the vyuha was not shattered there
कौरवाणाम् कथं चनkauravāṇām kathaṃ canaof the Kauravas in any way; of the Kurus in no way
रक्षितः सत्यसंधेनrakṣitaḥ satyasaṃdhenaprotected by the one true to his word; guarded by him whose vow was true
भारद्वाजेन धीमताbhāradvājena dhīmatāby the wise Bharadvaja; by the sagacious Drona
तथा एव पाण्डवेयानाम्tathā eva pāṇḍaveyānāmso too among the Pandavas; exactly so among the sons of Pandu
रक्षितः सव्यसाचिनाrakṣitaḥ savyasācināprotected by Savyasachin; guarded by Arjuna
न अभिध्यत महाव्यूहःna abhidhyata mahāvyūhaḥthe great array was not broken; the great vyuha did not collapse
भीमेन च सुरक्षितःbhīmena ca surakṣitaḥand well protected by Bhima; securely guarded by Bhima
अनुवाद

Sanjaya said: 'When the armies, yours and the enemy's, were arrayed, Dhananjaya, the great ratha-warrior, struck your ranks of chariots with arrows in battle, felling the leaders of the chariot-hosts, O Bharata. Struck down by Partha as though by Time at the end of a yuga, the warriors of Dhritarashtra nevertheless strove in battle and fought against the Pandavas, longing for shining glory and holding death itself to be their only retreat. With minds made single-pointed, they broke the array of the Pandavas again and again, O king, but they themselves were shattered in the fighting. Amid the fleeing, the broken, and those wheeling back and forth, nothing could any longer be distinguished among Pandavas and Kauravas alike. Dust rose up from the earth, veiling the sun; the cardinal directions and the directions between them could barely be told apart. Here and there, O lord of men, the battle went on, men recognizing one another only by guesswork, by signs, by names and lineages. Yet the array of the Kauravas was nowhere broken, for it was guarded by the wise Bharadvaja, true to his word; and just so the great array of the Pandavas, protected by Savyasachin and well guarded by Bhima, was not breached.'
