“These heroic great chariot-warriors, the mighty Dhartarashtras, have risen in fury to kill me alone in battle. Today I shall slay them before your eyes, there is no doubt of it. Therefore, charioteer, hold my horses carefully in the fight.” Having said this, Partha then pierced your son Duryodhana with ten sharp, gold-adorned arrows, and struck Nandaka in return with three arrows in the chest. But Duryodhana, having pierced mighty Bhima with sixty arrows, struck Vishoka with three other very sharp arrows. And in the battle, O king, as if smiling, he cut off Bhima's shining bow at the grip with three sharp arrows. Then Bhima, seeing his charioteer Vishoka tormented in the fight by the sharp arrows of your archer son, could not bear it; enraged, he took up a divine bow to kill your son, O great king, bull of the Bharatas. In fury he seized a hair-parting kshurapra and with it cut off the king's excellent bow. He, casting aside the severed bow and blazing as if with anger, quickly took up another, more powerful bow. He fitted to it a terrible arrow, radiant like Time-Death, and in fury struck Bhimasena with it in the chest. Deeply pierced and shaken, Bhima sank down onto the platform of his chariot and, sitting there, fell into a swoon. Seeing Bhima shaken, the great archers among the Pandavas' chariot-warriors, led by Abhimanyu, could not bear it, and calmly poured down upon the head of your son a tumultuous shower of sharp, blazing weapons. Then mighty Bhimasena, having regained consciousness, pierced Duryodhana with three arrows and again with five; and the Pandava pierced Shalya, the great archer, with twenty-five gold-feathered arrows, and he, wounded, withdrew from the battle.”

Even Bhima falls for a moment under Duryodhana's blow, but weakness does not become defeat: his allies at once shield him, and he himself returns to the fight. Here again the strength of the Pandavas as a community, not merely as separate heroes, shows itself.
