अनुवाद

Hearing that very fearsome, dreadful roar of his, Bhishma said to Drona and King Suyodhana: “Here Bhagadatta, the great archer, fights with the evil-souled Haidimba and holds his own only with difficulty. The rakshasa is a master of great illusion, and that king too is most wrathful; the two of them, having met, are of great valor, both like Time-Death itself. Indeed one can hear the great, joyful cry of the Pandavas, and the huge, fear-filled roar of the elephant. Let us go there — may fortune attend you — to protect the king. If he is left unprotected in the battle, he will soon lose his life. Hasten, you of great valor! Why delay? For a great and terrible battle is raging there, one that makes the hair stand on end. He is devoted, nobly born, a hero, and a commander of the army; it befits us, O steadfast ones, to save him.” Having heard these words of Bhishma, all the kings, led by the son of Bharadvaja, gathered together and, wishing to save Bhagadatta, set out at full speed to where he was. Seeing them depart, the Panchalas, led by Yudhishthira, together with the Pandavas, followed the foes from behind. Then the mighty lord of the rakshasas, seeing those armies, let out a tremendous roar, like the crash of a thunderbolt. Hearing that roar of his and seeing the elephants fighting, Bhishma, son of Shantanu, again spoke to the son of Bharadvaja: “This battle with the evil-souled Haidimba does not please me. He is now filled with strength and valor, and moreover he is not alone. He cannot be conquered in battle even by the wielder of the thunderbolt himself; he finds his mark and strikes true, while our mounts are weary and we ourselves have been wounded all day by the Panchalas and the Pandavas. Therefore this battle with the Pandavas, who shine with victory, does not please me. Let the withdrawal be proclaimed today; tomorrow we shall fight the enemy.”
