Bhishma, the foremost of chariot-warriors, enraged, checked the mighty Bhimasena before the eyes of the entire army. Then arrows loosed by Bhishma — gold-feathered, whetted on stone, polished with oil, and exceedingly sharp — struck Bhima in battle. The mighty Bhimasena hurled at him a javelin of tremendous speed, resembling an enraged venomous serpent, O Bharata. But Bhishma, in battle, cut down with well-jointed arrows this suddenly descending, hard-to-withstand javelin with its golden shaft. Then, with another sharp, golden broad-headed arrow, he cut Bhimasena's bow in two, O Bharata. After this, Satyaki swiftly approached Bhishma in the fight and struck your father, O lord of men, with many arrows. Then Bhishma, having fitted a sharp and exceedingly terrible arrow, felled the charioteer from the chariot of the Vrishni scion. When the charioteer was slain, his horses, swift as thought and wind, ran off wildly in every direction, O king. Then a tumultuous roar arose throughout the whole army, and among the great-souled Pandavas a cry of despair broke out: "Run! Seize them! Hold the horses! Run!" Such was the tumultuous noise around the chariot of Yuyudhana."

Bhishma again shows precision and cold composure: he not only holds off Bhima but instantly disables Satyaki's chariot by killing his charioteer. A single blow against the sarathi turns a heroic charge into chaos.
