Sanjaya said: 'Then the great chariot-warrior Virata struck the great chariot-warrior Bhishma with three arrows, and wounded his horses with three more. In answer, Bhishma, the skilled and mighty son of Shantanu, the great archer, pierced him with ten gold-feathered arrows. Drauni, a great chariot-warrior with a fearsome bow and a firm hand, struck the wielder of Gandiva with six arrows in the chest. Then Phalguna, slayer of enemy heroes, cut off his bow and struck him hard with sharp, feathered arrows. Ashvatthaman, seized with rage and unable to bear that Partha had cut his bow in battle, swiftly took up another bow, O king, and struck Phalguna with ninety sharp arrows, and Vasudeva with seventy of his finest arrows. Then Phalguna, together with Krishna, his eyes red with fury, drew a long, hot breath, pondered again and again, gripped Gandiva with his left hand, and in his wrath took up terrible, deadly, sharp arrows with even joints. With these he swiftly struck Drauni, best of the mighty, in battle; piercing his armor, they drew blood. But Drauni, pierced by the wielder of Gandiva, did not waver, and undismayed, releasing showers of arrows in turn, he stood his ground in the fight, O king, wishing to protect the great vow-keeper Bhishma. The best of men praised his great feat: that he was not ashamed and did not retreat before the two Krishnas united in battle. For he always fights fearlessly among the ranks, having obtained from Drona the rare and formidable array of astras together with their means of recall. Bibhatsu, scorcher of foes, settled his mind on this thought: "This is the son of my teacher, the beloved son of Drona; moreover, he is a brahmin, and therefore especially worthy of my respect." So the best of charioteers showed mercy toward the son of Bharadvaja. Leaving Drauni in the fight, the valiant Kaunteya, scorcher of foes, hastened on to battle, striking down your warriors.'

Arjuna is capable of destroying Ashvatthaman, but he deliberately holds back his hand out of respect for Drona and for his son's brahmin status. Even in the heat of fury he does not lose his inner restraint; this sharply distinguishes the strength of the Pandavas from mere military brutality.
