अनुवाद

Sanjaya said: 'As the sun began to redden, King Duryodhana, seized by the fury of battle and desiring to kill Bhima, charged at him. Seeing this hero and long-standing enemy approaching, greatly enraged Bhimasena spoke these words: "Now has come that very hour for which I have waited for so many years. Today I will kill you, unless you abandon the battlefield. Today, once you are slain, I will put an end to the suffering of Kunti, the whole span of our forest exile, and the suffering of Draupadi. You became an evil gamester and scorned the Pandavas; now, son of Gandhari, behold the calamity that has come upon you for that sin. Having earlier accepted the counsel of Karna and of Saubala, you acted willfully as you pleased, giving no thought to the Pandavas. In your delusion you scorned the Dasharha when He sued for peace, and joyfully sent your message through Uluka. Today I will kill you together with your followers and kinsmen, and requite the evil you committed before." Having said this, he drew his terrible bow, brandished it repeatedly, took up dreadful arrows shining like great thunderbolts, and in fury swiftly loosed twenty-six arrows at Suyodhana — shafts like blazing tongues of fire, straight-flying and like the vajra. Then with two arrows he struck his bow, with two his charioteer, and with four he sent his swift horses to the abode of Yama; with two more well-drawn arrows the crusher of foes cut down the parasol from the king's splendid chariot in that battle. With three arrows he cut down his blazing, lofty banner, and having felled it before the eyes of your son, roared aloud. That splendid banner, adorned with various jewels, suddenly fell from the chariot to the ground like lightning falling from a cloud. All the kings of the earth beheld the fallen banner of the Kuru lord — blazing like the sun, beautiful, bearing a jeweled serpent. Then Bhima, the great chariot-warrior, as if smiling, struck him with ten arrows in that battle, as one goads a great elephant. Then Jayadratha, king of the Sindhus and finest of charioteers, guarded Duryodhana's rear as befits a noble man. And Kripa, best of charioteers, raised the Kaurava of measureless might, impatient Duryodhana, onto his chariot. Deeply pierced and tormented by Bhimasena in that battle, King Duryodhana then sank down onto the seat of his chariot. After this, Jayadratha, desiring to kill Bhima, surrounded him with many thousands of chariots and closed off every direction to him.'
