संजय उवाच
वर्तमाने तथा रौद्रे राजन् वीरवरक्षये ॥
शकुनिः सौबलः श्रीमान् पाण्डवान् समुपाद्रवत् ॥
तथैव सात्वतो राजन् हार्दिक्यः परवीरहा ॥
अभ्यद्रवत संग्रामे पाण्डवानाम् अनीकिनीम् ॥
ततः काम्बोजमुख्यानां नदीजानां च वाजिनाम् ॥
आरट्टानां महीजानां सिन्धुजानां च सर्वशः ॥
वनायुजानां शुभ्राणां तथा पर्वतवासिनाम् ॥
ये चापरे तित्तिरजा जवना वातरंहसः ॥
सुवर्णालंकृतैर् एतैर् वर्मवद्भिः सुकल्पितैः ॥
हयैर् वातजवैर् मुख्यैः पाण्डवस्य सुतो बली ॥
अभ्यवर्तत तत् सैन्यं हृष्टरूपः परंतपः ॥
अर्जुनस्याथ दायाद इरावान् नाम वीर्यवान् ॥
सुतायां नागराजस्य जातः पार्थेन धीमता ॥
ऐरावतेन सा दत्ता अनपत्या महात्मना ॥
पत्यौ हते सुपर्णेन कृपणा दीनचेतना ॥
भार्यार्थं तां च जग्राह पार्थः कामवशानुगाम् ॥
एवम् एष समुत्पन्नः परक्षेत्रे ऽर्जुनात्मजः ॥
स नागलोके संवृद्धो मात्रा च परिरक्षितः ॥
पितृव्येण परित्यक्तः पार्थद्वेषाद् दुरात्मना ॥
रूपवान् वीर्यसंपन्नो गुणवान् सत्यविक्रमः ॥
इन्द्रलोकं जगामाशु श्रुत्वा तत्रार्जुनं गतम् ॥
सो ऽभिगम्य महात्मानं पितरं सत्यविक्रमम् ॥
अभ्यवादयद् अव्यग्रो विनयेन कृताञ्जलिः ॥
इरावान् अस्मि भद्रं ते पुत्रश् चाहं तवाभिभो ॥
मातुः समागमो यश् च तत् सर्वं प्रत्यवेदयत् ॥
तच् च सर्वं यथावृत्तम् अनुसस्मार पाण्डवः ॥
परिष्वज्य सुतं चापि सो ऽऽत्मनः सदृशं गुणैः ॥
प्रीतिमान् अभवत् पार्थो देवराजनिवेशने ॥
सो ऽर्जुनेन समाज्ञप्तो देवलोके तदा नृप ॥
प्रीतिपूर्वं महाबाहुः स्वकार्यं प्रति भारत ॥
युद्धकाले त्वयास्माकं साह्यं देयम् इति प्रभो ॥
बाढम् इत्य् एवम् उक्त्वा च युद्धकाल उपागतः ॥
कामवर्णजवैर् अश्वैः संवृतो बहुभिर् नृप ॥
ते हयाः काञ्चनापीडा नानावर्णा मनोजवाः ॥
उत्पेतुः सहसा राजन् हंसा इव महोदधौ ॥

vanāyujānāṃ śubhrāṇāṃ tathā parvatavāsinām ||
ye cāpare tittirajā javanā vātaraṃhasaḥ ||
suvarṇālaṃkṛtair etair varmavadbhiḥ sukalpitaiḥ ||
hayair vātajavair mukhyaiḥ pāṇḍavasya suto balī ||
abhyavartata tat sainyaṃ hṛṣṭarūpaḥ paraṃtapaḥ ||
arjunasyātha dāyāda irāvān nāma vīryavān ||
sutāyāṃ nāgarājasya jātaḥ pārthena dhīmatā ||
airāvatena sā dattā anapatyā mahātmanā ||
patyau hate suparṇena kṛpaṇā dīnacetanā ||
bhāryārthaṃ tāṃ ca jagrāha pārthaḥ kāmavaśānugām ||
evam eṣa samutpannaḥ parakṣetre 'rjunātmajaḥ ||
sa nāgaloke saṃvṛddho mātrā ca parirakṣitaḥ ||
pitṛvyeṇa parityaktaḥ pārthadveṣād durātmanā ||
rūpavān vīryasaṃpanno guṇavān satyavikramaḥ ||
indralokaṃ jagāmāśu śrutvā tatrārjunaṃ gatam ||
so 'bhigamya mahātmānaṃ pitaraṃ satyavikramam ||
abhyavādayad avyagro vinayena kṛtāñjaliḥ ||
irāvān asmi bhadraṃ te putraś cāhaṃ tavābhibho ||
mātuḥ samāgamo yaś ca tat sarvaṃ pratyavedayat ||
tac ca sarvaṃ yathāvṛttam anusasmāra pāṇḍavaḥ ||
pariṣvajya sutaṃ cāpi so ''tmanaḥ sadṛśaṃ guṇaiḥ ||
prītimān abhavat pārtho devarājaniveśane ||
so 'rjunena samājñapto devaloke tadā nṛpa ||
prītipūrvaṃ mahābāhuḥ svakāryaṃ prati bhārata ||
yuddhakāle tvayāsmākaṃ sāhyaṃ deyam iti prabho ||
bāḍham ity evam uktvā ca yuddhakāla upāgataḥ ||
kāmavarṇajavair aśvaiḥ saṃvṛto bahubhir nṛpa ||
te hayāḥ kāñcanāpīḍā nānāvarṇā manojavāḥ ||
utpetuḥ sahasā rājan haṃsā iva mahodadhau ||
Sanjaya said: "While this dreadful slaughter of the finest heroes continued, O king, the glorious Shakuni, son of Subala, attacked the Pandavas. Likewise Satvata Hardikya, Kritavarman, slayer of enemy heroes, rushed in battle upon the army of the Pandavas. Then the mighty son of the Pandava, the exultant scorcher of foes, mounted on the finest wind-swift horses, gold-adorned, armored and splendidly equipped, advanced against this army. Among these horses were the finest of Kamboja, of the river lands, of Aratta, of the plains, of Sindhu, bright forest horses, mountain horses and others of the Tittiri breed, swift as the wind. This was the valiant Iravan, heir of Arjuna, born of the wise Partha through the daughter of the king of the nagas. The great Airavata had given her, childless, unhappy and grieving, after her husband was slain by Garuda; Partha took her as his wife when she was overcome by love. Thus was born this son of Arjuna. He grew up in the world of the nagas, guarded by his mother, but was rejected by his father's evil-natured kinsman out of hatred for Partha. Handsome, endowed with strength and virtue, of true valor, he quickly set out for the world of Indra upon hearing that Arjuna had gone there. Approaching his great-souled, truly valiant father, Iravan calmly bowed to him with joined palms and said: 'I am Iravan; may good come to you. I am your son, lord.' He told him everything about the meeting with his mother, and the Pandava recalled all of it just as it had happened. Embracing his son, who resembled him in his qualities, Partha rejoiced in the abode of the king of the gods. Then in the world of the gods Arjuna lovingly charged him with a task, O king: 'In the hour of battle you must render us aid.' Iravan answered, 'So be it,' and when the time of battle came, he arrived, surrounded by a multitude of horses of every desired color and speed. These horses, with golden headbands, many-colored and swift as thought, suddenly sped forth like swans over the great ocean."
