अपराह्णे महाराज संग्रामः समपद्यत ॥
पर्जन्यसमनिर्घोषो भीष्मस्य सह पाण्डवैः ॥
ततो राजंस् तव सुता भीमसेनम् उपाद्रवन् ॥
परिवार्य रणे द्रोणं वसवो वासवं यथा ॥
ततः शांतनवो भीष्मः कृपश् च रथिनां वरः ॥
भगदत्तः सुशर्मा च धनंजयम् उपाद्रवन् ॥
हार्दिक्यो बाह्लिकश् चैव सात्यकिं समभिद्रुतौ ॥
अम्बष्ठकस् तु नृपतिर् अभिमन्युम् अवारयत् ॥
शेषास् त्व् अन्ये महाराज शेषान् एव महारथान् ॥
ततः प्रववृते युद्धं घोररूपं भयावहम् ॥
भीमसेनस् तु संप्रेक्ष्य पुत्रांस् तव जनेश्वर ॥
प्रजज्वाल रणे क्रुद्धो हविषा हव्यवाड् इव ॥
पुत्रास् तु तव कौन्तेयं छादयां चक्रिरे शरैः ॥
प्रावृषीव महाराज जलदाः पर्वतं यथा ॥
स च्छाद्यमानो बहुधा पुत्रैस् तव विशां पते ॥
सृक्किणी विलिहन् वीरः शार्दूल इव दर्पितः ॥
व्यूढोरस्कं ततो भीमः पातयाम् आस पार्थिव ॥
क्षुरप्रेण सुतीक्ष्णेन सो ऽभवद् गतजीवितः ॥
अपरेण तु भल्लेन पीतेन निशितेन च ॥
अपातयत् कुण्डलिनं सिंहः क्षुद्रमृगं यथा ॥
ततः सुनिशितान् पीतान् समादत्त शिलीमुखान् ॥
स सप्त त्वरया युक्तः पुत्रांस् ते प्राप्य मारिष ॥
प्रेषिता भीमसेनेन शरास् ते दृढधन्वना ॥
अपातयन्त पुत्रांस् ते रथेभ्यः सुमहारथान् ॥
अनाधृष्टिं कुण्डभेदं वैराटं दीर्घलोचनम् ॥
दीर्घबाहुं सुबाहुं च तथैव कनकध्वजम् ॥
प्रपतन्त स्म ते वीरा विरेजुर् भरतर्षभ ॥
वसन्ते पुष्पशबलाश् चूताः प्रपतिता इव ॥
ततः प्रदुद्रुवुः शेषाः पुत्रास् तव विशां पते ॥
तं कालम् इव मन्यन्तो भीमसेनं महाबलम् ॥
द्रोणस् तु समरे वीरं निर्दहन्तं सुतांस् तव ॥
यथाद्रिं वारिधाराभिः समन्ताद् व्यकिरच् छरैः ॥
तत्राद्भुतम् अपश्याम कुन्तीपुत्रस्य पौरुषम् ॥
द्रोणेन वार्यमाणो ऽपि निजघ्ने यत् सुतांस् तव ॥
यथा हि गोवृषो वर्षं संधारयति खात् पतत् ॥
भीमस् तथा द्रोणमुक्तं शरवर्षम् अदीधरत् ॥
अद्भुतं च महाराज तत्र चक्रे वृकोदरः ॥
यत् पुत्रांस् ते ऽवधीत् संख्ये द्रोणं चैव न्ययोधयत् ॥
पुत्रेषु तव वीरेषु चिक्रीडार्जुनपूर्वजः ॥
मृगेष्व् इव महाराज चरन् व्याघ्रो महाबलः ॥
यथा वा पशुमध्यस्थो द्रावयेत पशून् वृकः ॥
वृकोदरस् तव सुतांस् तथा व्यद्रावयद् रणे ॥
गाङ्गेयो भगदत्तश् च गौतमश् च महारथः ॥
पाण्डवं रभसं युद्धे वारयाम् आसुर् अर्जुनम् ॥
अस्त्रैर् अस्त्राणि संवार्य तेषां सो ऽतिरथो रणे ॥
प्रवीरांस् तव सैन्येषु प्रेषयाम् आस मृत्यवे ॥
अभिमन्युश् च राजानम् अम्बष्ठं लोकविश्रुतम् ॥
विरथं रथिनां श्रेष्ठं कारयाम् आस सायकैः ॥
विरथो वध्यमानः स सौभद्रेण यशस्विना ॥
अवप्लुत्य रथात् तूर्णं सव्रीडो मनुजाधिपः ॥
असिं चिक्षेप समरे सौभद्रस्य महात्मनः ॥
आरुरोह रथं चैव हार्दिक्यस्य महात्मनः ॥
आपतन्तं तु निस्त्रिंशं युद्धमार्गविशारदः ॥
लाघवाद् व्यंसयाम् आस सौभद्रः परवीरहा ॥
व्यंसितं वीक्ष्य निस्त्रिंशं सौभद्रेण रणे तदा ॥
साधु साध्व् इति सैन्यानां प्रणादो ऽभूद् विशां पते ॥

kṣurapreṇa sutīkṣṇena so 'bhavad gatajīvitaḥ ||
apareṇa tu bhallena pītena niśitena ca ||
apātayat kuṇḍalinaṃ siṃhaḥ kṣudramṛgaṃ yathā ||
tataḥ suniśitān pītān samādatta śilīmukhān ||
sa sapta tvarayā yuktaḥ putrāṃs te prāpya māriṣa ||
preṣitā bhīmasenena śarās te dṛḍhadhanvanā ||
apātayanta putrāṃs te rathebhyaḥ sumahārathān ||

droṇena vāryamāṇo 'pi nijaghne yat sutāṃs tava ||
yathā hi govṛṣo varṣaṃ saṃdhārayati khāt patat ||

āruroha rathaṃ caiva hārdikyasya mahātmanaḥ ||
āpatantaṃ tu nistriṃśaṃ yuddhamārgaviśāradaḥ ||
lāghavād vyaṃsayām āsa saubhadraḥ paravīrahā ||
vyaṃsitaṃ vīkṣya nistriṃśaṃ saubhadreṇa raṇe tadā ||
sādhu sādhv iti sainyānāṃ praṇādo 'bhūd viśāṃ pate ||

Seeing your sons, lord of men, Bhimasena blazed up in anger on the field, like fire fed with sacrificial oil. Your sons began to cover Kaunteya with arrows, as rain clouds cover a mountain in the monsoon season. Covered on all sides by your sons, the hero licked the corners of his mouth like a proud, furious tiger. Then Bhima felled Vyudhoraska with a very sharp kshurapra arrow, and he became lifeless. With another golden, well-honed bhalla arrow he struck down Kundalin, as a lion fells small prey. Then he swiftly took seven very sharp, golden arrows, and these arrows, released by the strong-bowed Bhimasena, having overtaken your sons, O venerable one, threw down from their chariots the great chariot-warriors: Anadhrishti, Kundabheda, Vairata, Dirghalochana, Dirghabahu, Subahu, and Kanakadhvaja. There we beheld a marvel: the valor of Kunti's son — though restrained by Drona, he continued to strike down your sons. As a mighty bull withstands the rain falling from the sky, so Bhima withstood the shower of arrows released by Drona. And another marvel Vrikodara performed there, great king: he was killing your sons in battle and fighting with Drona at the same time. Among your heroic sons, Arjuna's elder brother sported like a mighty tiger among deer, or as a wolf amid a herd scatters the cattle; so Vrikodara routed your sons in battle. Gangeya, Bhagadatta, and the great chariot-warrior Gautama held back the fierce Pandava Arjuna in battle. Repelling their astras with his own, this atiratha sent the finest heroes of your army to their death. Abhimanyu, with his arrows, deprived the world-renowned King Ambashtha, foremost of charioteers, of his chariot. Chariotless and struck down by the glorious Saubhadra, that lord of men leapt quickly from his ratha in shame, hurled his sword at the noble Saubhadra, and mounted the chariot of the mighty Hardikya. But Saubhadra, master of the ways of war and destroyer of enemy heroes, skillfully deflected the flying sword. Seeing the sword turned aside by Abhimanyu in battle, the armies, lord of peoples, cried out, 'Well done! Well done!'
