धृष्टद्युम्नमुखास् त्व् अन्ये तव सैन्यम् अयोधयन् ॥
तथैव तावकाः सर्वे पाण्डुसैन्यम् अयोधयन् ॥
तत्राक्रन्दो महान् आसीत् तव तेषां च भारत ॥
निघ्नतां भृशम् अन्योन्यं कुर्वतां कर्म दुष्करम् ॥
अन्योन्यं हि रणे शूराः केशेष्व् आक्षिप्य मारिष ॥

jātarūpamayāś carṣṭīḥ śaktyaś ca kanakojjvalāḥ ||
apakṛttāś ca patitā musalāni gurūṇi ca ||

jīvanta iva dṛśyante gatasattvā mahārathāḥ ||
gadāvimathitair gātrair musalair bhinnamastakāḥ ||
gajavājirathakṣuṇṇāḥ śerate sma narāḥ kṣitau ||
tathaivāśvanṛnāgānāṃ śarīrair ābabhau tadā ||
saṃchannā vasudhā rājan parvatair iva sarvataḥ ||
samare patitaiś caiva śaktyṛṣṭiśaratomaraiḥ ||
nistriṃśaiḥ paṭṭiśaiḥ prāsair ayaskuntaiḥ paraśvadhaiḥ ||
parighair bhiṇḍipālaiś ca śataghnībhis tathaiva ca ||
śarīraiḥ śastrabhinnaiś ca samāstīryata medinī ||
niḥśabdair alpaśabdaiś ca śoṇitaughapariplutaiḥ ||
gatāsubhir amitraghna vibabhau saṃvṛtā mahī ||
Other warriors led by Dhrishtadyumna fought with your army, and likewise all your men fought with the army of Panda's sons. There, O Bharata, a great uproar arose among your men and theirs, as they struck each other fiercely and performed a fearsome task. Heroes in battle seized one another by the hair, venerable one, and fought with nails, teeth, fists, knees, arms, open palms, and well-honed swords; finding an opening in one another, they sent each other to the abode of Yama. Father slew son, and son slew father in battle; with minds thrown into confusion, men fought there. On the field lay beautiful gold-backed bows, O Bharata, cast off by the slain, and costly quivers; sharp arrows with golden and silver feathers, polished with oil, gleamed like sloughed-off snakeskins. There were swords with hilts of ivory adorned with gold, and cast-off shields of archers with golden backs; javelins ornamented with gold, pattishas adorned with gold, golden rishtis and shaktis blazing with gold; severed and fallen heavy clubs, iron staves (parighas), pattishas, bhindipalas, venerable one, and fallen, colorful tomaras adorned with gold; various saddle-cloths and yak-tail fans. The great chariot-warriors, though they had cast away their many kinds of weapons and fallen, though already lifeless, still seemed alive. Men lay on the ground with limbs crushed by maces, heads shattered by clubs, and bodies trampled by elephants, horses, and chariots. Likewise the earth, covered with the bodies of horses, men, and elephants, gleamed, O king, as though covered on all sides with mountains. In the battle, the earth was strewn with fallen shaktis, rishtis, arrows, tomaras, swords, pattishas, javelins, iron spears, axes, parighas, bhindipalas, shataghnis, and bodies pierced by weapons. Covered with lifeless bodies drenched in streams of blood, silent or barely groaning, the earth gleamed, O destroyer of foes.
