संजय उवाच
ततो दुर्योधनो राजा शकुनिश् चापि सौबलः ॥
दुःशासनश् च पुत्रस् ते सूतपुत्रश् च दुर्जयः ॥
समागम्य महाराज मन्त्रं चक्रूर् विवक्षितम् ॥
कथं पाण्डुसुता युद्धे जेतव्याः सगणा इति ॥
ततो दुर्योधनो राजा सर्वांस् तान् आह मन्त्रिणः ॥
सूतपुत्रं समाभाष्य सौबलं च महाबलम् ॥
द्रोणो भीष्मः कृपः शल्यः सौमदत्तिश् च संयुगे ॥
न पार्थान् प्रतिबाधन्ते न जाने तत्र कारणम् ॥
अवध्यमानास् ते चापि क्षपयन्ति बलं मम ॥
सो ऽस्मि क्षीणबलः कर्ण क्षीणशस्त्रश् च संयुगे ॥
निकृतः पाण्डवैः शूरैर् अवध्यैर् दैवतैर् अपि ॥
सो ऽहं संशयम् आपन्नः प्रकरिष्ये कथं रणम् ॥
तम् अब्रवीन् महाराज सूतपुत्रो नराधिपम् ॥
मा शुचो भरतश्रेष्ठ प्रकरिष्ये प्रियं तव ॥
भीष्मः शांतनवस् तूर्णम् अपयातु महारणात् ॥
निवृत्ते युधि गाङ्गेये न्यस्तशस्त्रे च भारत ॥
अहं पार्थान् हनिष्यामि सनितान् सर्वसोमकैः ॥
पश्यतो युधि भीष्मस्य शपे सत्येन ते नृप ॥
पाण्डवेषु दयां राजन् सदा भीष्मः करोति वै ॥
अशक्तश् च रणे भीष्मो जेतुम् एतान् महारथान् ॥
अभिमानी रणे भीष्मो नित्यं चापि रणप्रियः ॥
स कथं पाण्डवान् युद्धे जेष्यते तात संगतान् ॥
स त्वं शीघ्रम् इतो गत्वा भीष्मस्य शिबिरं प्रति ॥
अनुमान्य रणे भीष्मं शस्त्रं न्यासय भारत ॥
न्यस्तशस्त्रे ततो भीष्मे निहतान् पश्य पाण्डवान् ॥
मयैकेन रणे राजन् ससुहृद्गणबान्धवान् ॥

droṇo bhīṣmaḥ kṛpaḥ śalyaḥ saumadattiś ca saṃyuge ||
na pārthān pratibādhante na jāne tatra kāraṇam ||
avadhyamānās te cāpi kṣapayanti balaṃ mama ||
so 'smi kṣīṇabalaḥ karṇa kṣīṇaśastraś ca saṃyuge ||
nikṛtaḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ śūrair avadhyair daivatair api ||
so 'haṃ saṃśayam āpannaḥ prakariṣye kathaṃ raṇam ||
tam abravīn mahārāja sūtaputro narādhipam ||
mā śuco bharataśreṣṭha prakariṣye priyaṃ tava ||
bhīṣmaḥ śāṃtanavas tūrṇam apayātu mahāraṇāt ||
nivṛtte yudhi gāṅgeye nyastaśastre ca bhārata ||
ahaṃ pārthān haniṣyāmi sanitān sarvasomakaiḥ ||
paśyato yudhi bhīṣmasya śape satyena te nṛpa ||
pāṇḍaveṣu dayāṃ rājan sadā bhīṣmaḥ karoti vai ||
aśaktaś ca raṇe bhīṣmo jetum etān mahārathān ||
abhimānī raṇe bhīṣmo nityaṃ cāpi raṇapriyaḥ ||
sa kathaṃ pāṇḍavān yuddhe jeṣyate tāta saṃgatān ||
sa tvaṃ śīghram ito gatvā bhīṣmasya śibiraṃ prati ||
anumānya raṇe bhīṣmaṃ śastraṃ nyāsaya bhārata ||
nyastaśastre tato bhīṣme nihatān paśya pāṇḍavān ||
mayaikena raṇe rājan sasuhṛdgaṇabāndhavān ||
Sanjaya said: 'Then King Duryodhana, Shakuni son of Subala, your son Duhshasana, and the invincible son of the charioteer, Karna, met together, great king, and took counsel on what was intended: how to conquer the sons of Pandu in battle along with their troops. Then King Duryodhana, addressing the son of the charioteer and mighty Saubala, said to all these counselors: "Drona, Bhishma, Kripa, Shalya, and Saumadatti do not press back the Parthas in battle; I do not know the reason for this. Remaining unstruck themselves, they nevertheless destroy my army. Here I am, Karna, left in battle with exhausted strength and exhausted weapons; the valiant Pandavas, invincible even to the gods, have overwhelmed me. I have fallen into doubt: how shall I carry on the war?" Then, great king, the son of the charioteer said to the lord of men: "Do not grieve, best of the Bharatas. I shall do what is dear to you. Let Bhishma, son of Shantanu, depart at once from the great battle. When the son of Ganga ceases fighting and lays down his weapons, O Bharata, I shall slay the Parthas together with all the Somakas. I swear to you by the truth, O king, before the eyes of Bhishma in battle. Bhishma, O king, always shows compassion toward the Pandavas; he has no strength to conquer these great chariot-warriors in battle. Bhishma is proud on the field and always loves battle; how then could he conquer the assembled Pandavas in war, dear friend? So go quickly from here to Bhishma's camp and, having honored him, ask him to lay down his weapons, O Bharata. When Bhishma has laid down his weapons, you will see the Pandavas, their friends, troops, and kinsmen, struck down by me alone in battle."'
