संजय उवाच
दृष्ट्वा भीष्मं रणे क्रुद्धं पाण्डवैर् अभिसंवृतम् ॥
यथा मेघैर् महाराज तपान्ते दिवि भास्करम् ॥
दुर्योधनो महाराज दुःशासनम् अभाषत ॥
एष शूरो महेष्वासो भीष्मः शत्रुनिषूदनः ॥
छादितः पाण्डवैः शूरैः समन्ताद् भरतर्षभ ॥
तस्य कार्यं त्वया वीर रक्षणं सुमहात्मनः ॥
रक्ष्यमाणो हि समरे भीष्मो ऽस्माकं पितामहः ॥
निहन्यात् समरे यत्तान् पाञ्चालान् पाण्डवैः सह ॥
तत्र कार्यम् अहं मन्ये भीष्मस्यैवाभिरक्षणम् ॥
गोप्ता ह्य् एष महेष्वासो भीष्मो ऽस्माकं पितामहः ॥
स भवान् सर्वसैन्येन परिवार्य पितामहम् ॥
समरे दुष्करं कर्म कुर्वाणं परिरक्षतु ॥
एवम् उक्तस् तु समरे पुत्रो दुःशासनस् तव ॥
परिवार्य स्थितो भीष्मं सैन्येन महता वृतः ॥

tasya kāryaṃ tvayā vīra rakṣaṇaṃ sumahātmanaḥ ||
rakṣyamāṇo hi samare bhīṣmo 'smākaṃ pitāmahaḥ ||
nihanyāt samare yattān pāñcālān pāṇḍavaiḥ saha ||
tatra kāryam ahaṃ manye bhīṣmasyaivābhirakṣaṇam ||
goptā hy eṣa maheṣvāso bhīṣmo 'smākaṃ pitāmahaḥ ||
sa bhavān sarvasainyena parivārya pitāmaham ||
samare duṣkaraṃ karma kurvāṇaṃ parirakṣatu ||
evam uktas tu samare putro duḥśāsanas tava ||
parivārya sthito bhīṣmaṃ sainyena mahatā vṛtaḥ ||

तपान्ते दिवि भास्करम्tapānte divi bhāskaramthe sun in the sky at the end of the hot season; the sun in the summer sky
दुर्योधनः महाराजduryodhanaḥ mahārājaDuryodhana, great king; King Duryodhana
दुःशासनम् अभाषतduḥśāsanam abhāṣatasaid to Duhshasana; addressed Duhshasana
एषः शूरः महेष्वासःeṣaḥ śūraḥ maheṣvāsaḥthis hero, the great archer; this brave, mighty bowman

समन्तात् भरतर्षभsamantāt bharatarṣabhafrom all sides, bull of the Bharatas; from every side, O Bharata
तस्य कार्यम् त्वया वीरtasya kāryam tvayā vīrait is your task, hero, for him; you should, hero
रक्षणम् सुमहात्मनःrakṣaṇam sumahātmanaḥto guard the great-souled one; to protect the great of soul
रक्ष्यमाणः हि समरेrakṣyamāṇaḥ hi samarefor if guarded in battle; if protected on the field
भीष्मः अस्माकम् पितामहःbhīṣmaḥ asmākam pitāmahaḥBhishma, our grandfather; our grandfather Bhishma
निहन्यात् समरे यत्तान्nihanyāt samare yattānwould slay in battle the striving; will destroy in combat the diligent
पाञ्चालान् पाण्डवैः सहpāñcālān pāṇḍavaiḥ sahaPanchalas together with the Pandavas; the Panchalas and the Pandavas
तत्र कार्यम् अहम् मन्येtatra kāryam aham manyehere I consider the task to be; in this I see the task
भीष्मस्य एव अभिरक्षणम्bhīṣmasya eva abhirakṣaṇamthe protection of Bhishma alone; only the guarding of Bhishma
गोप्ता हि एषः महेष्वासःgoptā hi eṣaḥ maheṣvāsaḥfor this great archer is our protector; for this mighty bowman
भीष्मः अस्माकम् पितामहःbhīṣmaḥ asmākam pitāmahaḥBhishma, our grandfather; our grandfather Bhishma
सः भवान् सर्वसैन्येनsaḥ bhavān sarvasainyenaso you, with the whole army; thus you, with all your forces

समरे दुष्करम् कर्मsamare duṣkaram karmain battle performing a difficult deed; on the field doing an impossible feat

सैन्येन महता वृतःsainyena mahatā vṛtaḥencompassed by a great army; with a great host around him
अनुवाद

Sanjaya said: "Seeing that the enraged Bhishma was surrounded in battle by the Pandavas, as the sun in the sky is surrounded by clouds at the end of the hot season, Duryodhana, the great king, said to Duhshasana: 'This brave and mighty archer Bhishma, destroyer of enemies, O bull of the Bharatas, is encircled on every side by the valiant Pandavas. It is for you, hero, to protect this great soul. For if our grandfather Bhishma is protected in battle, he will slay the striving Panchalas together with the Pandavas. In this matter I consider the guarding of Bhishma to be the chief task. For this mighty archer Bhishma, our grandfather, is our protector. Therefore you, with your entire army, surround the grandfather and guard him as he performs his difficult work in battle.' Hearing this in the fight, your son Duhshasana, encompassed by a great army, surrounded Bhishma and took his stand beside him."
