संजय उवाच
सात्यकिं दंशितं युद्धे भीष्मायाभ्युद्यतं तदा ॥
आर्श्यशृङ्गिर् महेष्वासो वारयाम् आस संयुगे ॥
माधवस् तु सुसंक्रुद्धो राक्षसं नवभिः शरैः ॥
आजघान रणे राजन् प्रहसन्न् इव भारत ॥
तथैव राक्षसो राजन् माधवं निशितैः शरैः ॥
अर्दयाम् आस राजेन्द्र संक्रुद्धः शिनिपुंगवम् ॥
शैनेयः शरसंघं तु प्रेषयाम् आस संयुगे ॥
राक्षसाय सुसंक्रुद्धो माधवः परवीरहा ॥
ततो रक्षो महाबाहुं सात्यकिं सत्यविक्रमम् ॥
विव्याध विशिखैस् तीक्ष्णैः सिंहनादं ननाद च ॥
माधवस् तु भृशं विद्धो राक्षसेन रणे तदा ॥
धैर्यम् आलम्ब्य तेजस्वी जहास च ननाद च ॥
भगदत्तस् ततः क्रुद्धो माधवं निशितैः शरैः ॥
ताडयाम् आस समरे तोत्त्रैर् इव महागजम् ॥
विहाय राक्षसं युद्धे शैनेयो रथिनां वरः ॥
प्राग्ज्योतिषाय चिक्षेप शरान् संनतपर्वणः ॥
तस्य प्राग्ज्योतिषो राजा माधवस्य महद् धनुः ॥
चिच्छेद शितधारेण भल्लेन कृतहस्तवत् ॥
अथान्यद् धनुर् आदाय वेगवत् परवीरहा ॥
भगदत्तं रणे क्रुद्धो विव्याध निशितैः शरैः ॥
सो ऽतिविद्धो महेष्वासः सृक्किणी संलिहन् मुहुः ॥
शक्तिं कनकवैडूर्यभूषिताम् आयसीं दृढाम् ॥
यमदण्डोपमां घोरां प्राहिणोत् सात्यकाय वै ॥
ताम् आपतन्तीं सहसा तस्य बाहोर् बलेरिताम् ॥
सात्यकिः समरे राजंस् त्रिधा चिच्छेद सायकैः ॥
सा पपात तदा भूमौ महोल्केव हतप्रभा ॥
शक्तिं विनिहतां दृष्ट्वा पुत्रस् तव विशां पते ॥
महता रथवंशेन वारयाम् आस माधवम् ॥
तथा परिवृतं दृष्ट्वा वार्ष्णेयानां महारथम् ॥
दुर्योधनो भृशं हृष्टो भ्रातॄन् सर्वान् उवाच ह ॥
तथा कुरुत कौरव्या यथा वः सात्यको युधि ॥
न जीवन् प्रतिनिर्याति महतो ऽस्माद् रथव्रजात् ॥
अस्मिन् हते हतं मन्ये पाण्डवानां महद् बलम् ॥
तत् तथेति वचस् तस्य परिगृह्य महारथाः ॥
शैनेयं योधयाम् आसुर् भीष्मस्य प्रमुखे तदा ॥

ardayām āsa rājendra saṃkruddhaḥ śinipuṃgavam ||
śaineyaḥ śarasaṃghaṃ tu preṣayām āsa saṃyuge ||
rākṣasāya susaṃkruddho mādhavaḥ paravīrahā ||
tato rakṣo mahābāhuṃ sātyakiṃ satyavikramam ||
vivyādha viśikhais tīkṣṇaiḥ siṃhanādaṃ nanāda ca ||
mādhavas tu bhṛśaṃ viddho rākṣasena raṇe tadā ||
dhairyam ālambya tejasvī jahāsa ca nanāda ca ||
bhagadattas tataḥ kruddho mādhavaṃ niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ||
tāḍayām āsa samare tottrair iva mahāgajam ||
vihāya rākṣasaṃ yuddhe śaineyo rathināṃ varaḥ ||
prāgjyotiṣāya cikṣepa śarān saṃnataparvaṇaḥ ||
tasya prāgjyotiṣo rājā mādhavasya mahad dhanuḥ ||
ciccheda śitadhāreṇa bhallena kṛtahastavat ||
athānyad dhanur ādāya vegavat paravīrahā ||
bhagadattaṃ raṇe kruddho vivyādha niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ||
so 'tividdho maheṣvāsaḥ sṛkkiṇī saṃlihan muhuḥ ||
śaktiṃ kanakavaiḍūryabhūṣitām āyasīṃ dṛḍhām ||
yamadaṇḍopamāṃ ghorāṃ prāhiṇot sātyakāya vai ||
tām āpatantīṃ sahasā tasya bāhor baleritām ||
sātyakiḥ samare rājaṃs tridhā ciccheda sāyakaiḥ ||
sā papāta tadā bhūmau maholkeva hataprabhā ||
śaktiṃ vinihatāṃ dṛṣṭvā putras tava viśāṃ pate ||
mahatā rathavaṃśena vārayām āsa mādhavam ||
tathā parivṛtaṃ dṛṣṭvā vārṣṇeyānāṃ mahāratham ||
duryodhano bhṛśaṃ hṛṣṭo bhrātṝn sarvān uvāca ha ||
tathā kuruta kauravyā yathā vaḥ sātyako yudhi ||
na jīvan pratiniryāti mahato 'smād rathavrajāt ||
asmin hate hataṃ manye pāṇḍavānāṃ mahad balam ||
tat tatheti vacas tasya parigṛhya mahārathāḥ ||
śaineyaṃ yodhayām āsur bhīṣmasya pramukhe tadā ||
Sanjaya said: "Arshyashringi, the great archer, held back in battle the armored Satyaki, who had then rushed toward Bhishma. Greatly enraged, Madhava-Satyaki, as if laughing, struck the rakshasa with nine arrows in the fight, O king. And the rakshasa, growing angry, began to press Madhava, the bull of the Shini clan, with sharp arrows, O lord of kings. Then Shaineya-Madhava, the slayer of enemy heroes, in great fury loosed a mass of arrows at the rakshasa. After this the rakshasa pierced the mighty-armed Satyaki of true valor with sharp arrows and let out a lion's roar. Satyaki, though sorely wounded then by the rakshasa in battle, summoned his courage, laughed, and roared himself. Then the enraged Bhagadatta struck Madhava with sharp arrows in the fight, as one goads a great elephant. Leaving the rakshasa, Shaineya, the best of chariot-warriors, loosed curved-jointed arrows at the king of Pragjyotisha. But the king of Pragjyotisha skillfully cut Madhava's great bow with a sharp-edged bhalla arrow. Then the slayer of foes swiftly took up another bow and, in his fury, pierced Bhagadatta with sharp arrows. The sorely wounded great archer, licking the corners of his mouth again and again, hurled at Satyaki a terrible, sturdy iron shakti adorned with gold and vaidurya, dreadful as the staff of Yama. Satyaki, O king, cut this spear into three pieces with his arrows as it swooped down upon him, driven by the strength of Bhagadatta's arm. It fell then to the ground, like a great firebrand robbed of its glow. Seeing the shakti destroyed, your son, O lord of the people, held back Madhava with a great line of chariots. Seeing the great chariot-warrior of the Vrishnis thus surrounded, Duryodhana, greatly delighted, said to all his brothers: 'Kauravas, act so that your Satyaki does not come back alive out of this great array of chariots in battle. When he is slain, I shall count the great host of the Pandavas as slain.' Accepting his word as a command, the great chariot-warriors then began to fight with Shaineya before Bhishma."
