Then the hero Bhagadatta, the great chariot-warrior, hurled at Bhima in battle a swift, gold-shafted, priceless shakti. King Saindhava threw a tomara, the mighty-armed warrior a pattisha, Kripa, O king, a shataghni, and Shalya, in the fight, an arrow. Then the other great bowmen loosed five arrows each at Bhimasena with force. But the son of the Wind split the tomara in two with a kshurapra, cut the pattisha with three arrows as if it were a sesame stalk, shattered the shataghni with nine heron-feathered arrows, cut the arrow shot by the king of Madra, and swiftly split the shakti hurled by Bhagadatta in battle. Likewise Bhimasena, glorious in war, cut each of the other terrible arrows into three pieces with his curved arrows, and then struck all those great bowmen, each with three arrows.

The weapons hurled at Bhima grow ever heavier — spear, tomara, pattisha, shataghni — yet he cuts through all of them. This is not mere bodily strength but battle mastery that unmakes an enemy's design while it is still in flight.
