ततो धनंजयस् तत्र वर्तमाने महारणे ॥
जगाम स रथेनाजौ भीमं दृष्ट्वा महारथम् ॥
निघ्नन्तं समरे शत्रून् योधयानं च सायकैः ॥
तौ तु तत्र महात्मानौ समेतौ वीक्ष्य पाण्डवौ ॥
नाशशंसुर् जयं तत्र तावकाः पुरुषर्षभ ॥
अथार्जुनो रणे भीष्मं योधयन् वै महारथम् ॥
भीष्मस्य निधनाकाङ्क्षी पुरस्कृत्य शिखण्डिनम् ॥
आससाद रणे योधांस् तावकान् दश भारत ॥
ये स्म भीमं रणे राजन् योधयन्तो व्यवस्थिताः ॥
बीभत्सुस् तान् अथाविध्यद् भीमस्य प्रियकाम्यया ॥
ततो दुर्योधनो राजा सुशर्माणम् अचोदयत् ॥
अर्जुनस्य वधार्थाय भीमसेनस्य चोभयोः ॥
सुशर्मन् गच्छ शीघ्रं त्वं बलौघैः परिवारितः ॥
जहि पाण्डुसुताव् एतौ धनंजयवृकोदरौ ॥
तच् छ्रुत्वा शासनं तस्य त्रिगर्तः प्रस्थलाधिपः ॥
अभिद्रुत्य रणे भीमम् अर्जुनं चैव धन्विनौ ॥
रथैर् अनेकसाहस्रैः परिवव्रे समन्ततः ॥
ततः प्रववृते युद्धम् अर्जुनस्य परैः सह ॥

ye sma bhīmaṃ raṇe rājan yodhayanto vyavasthitāḥ ||
bībhatsus tān athāvidhyad bhīmasya priyakāmyayā ||
tato duryodhano rājā suśarmāṇam acodayat ||
arjunasya vadhārthāya bhīmasenasya cobhayoḥ ||
suśarman gaccha śīghraṃ tvaṃ balaughaiḥ parivāritaḥ ||
jahi pāṇḍusutāv etau dhanaṃjayavṛkodarau ||
tac chrutvā śāsanaṃ tasya trigartaḥ prasthalādhipaḥ ||
abhidrutya raṇe bhīmam arjunaṃ caiva dhanvinau ||
rathair anekasāhasraiḥ parivavre samantataḥ ||
tataḥ pravavṛte yuddham arjunasya paraiḥ saha ||

योधयानम् च सायकैःyodhayānam ca sāyakaiḥand fighting with arrows; waging battle with shafts
तौ तु तत्र महात्मानौtau tu tatra mahātmānauthose two noble ones there; these two great souls
समेतौ वीक्ष्य पाण्डवौsametau vīkṣya pāṇḍavauseeing the two Pandavas united; seeing them together
न आशशंसुः जयम् तत्रna āśaśaṃsuḥ jayam tatrano longer hoped for victory there; lost hope of victory
तावकाः पुरुषर्षभtāvakāḥ puruṣarṣabhayour warriors, O bull among men; your men
अथ अर्जुनः रणे भीष्मम्atha arjunaḥ raṇe bhīṣmamthen Arjuna, in battle, [fighting] Bhishma; then Partha
योधयन् वै महारथम्yodhayan vai mahārathamwaging battle with the great chariot-warrior; fighting with Bhishma
भीष्मस्य निधनाकाङ्क्षीbhīṣmasya nidhanākāṅkṣīdesiring Bhishma's death; seeking to slay Bhishma
पुरस्कृत्य शिखण्डिनम्puraskṛtya śikhaṇḍinamhaving placed Shikhandin in front; having put Shikhandin forward
आससाद रणे योधान्āsasāda raṇe yodhānreached the warriors in battle; approached the fighters
तावकान् दश भारतtāvakān daśa bhāratayour ten, O Bharata; your ten men
ये स्म भीमम् रणे राजन्ye sma bhīmam raṇe rājanwho, in battle, O king, against Bhima; who stood against Bhima
योधयन्तः व्यवस्थिताःyodhayantaḥ vyavasthitāḥstood arrayed, fighting; were positioned
बीभत्सुः तान् अथ अविध्यत्bībhatsuḥ tān atha avidhyatBibhatsu then pierced them; Arjuna then wounded them
भीमस्य प्रियकाम्ययाbhīmasya priyakāmyayāwishing to please Bhima; for Bhima's sake

अर्जुनस्य परैः सहarjunasya paraiḥ sahaof Arjuna with the enemy; of Partha with his foes
अनुवाद

While the great battle raged there, Dhananjaya, seeing the great chariot-warrior Bhima slaying enemies and fighting with his arrows in battle, rode forth to him on his chariot. Your warriors, O bull among men, seeing those two noble Pandavas united there, no longer hoped for victory. Then Arjuna, waging battle in the field against the great chariot-warrior Bhishma, desiring Bhishma's death and having placed Shikhandin before him, came upon ten of your warriors, O Bharata, who stood arrayed fighting against Bhima. Bibhatsu then pierced them, wishing to please Bhima. Then King Duryodhana urged Susharman on, to slay both Arjuna and Bhimasena: 'Susharman, go quickly, surrounded by floods of troops, and slay these two sons of Pandu, Dhananjaya and Vrikodara.' Having heard his command, the Trigarta, lord of Prasthala, charged in battle at Bhima and Arjuna, the two bowmen, and surrounded them on every side with many thousands of chariots. Then the battle of Arjuna with the enemy broke out.
