"Bhimasena, fighting the elephant division, shone with great might, like Shakra with the thunderbolt in hand, shattering the finest mountains. The elephants, mountain-like, slain by Bhima, fell together to the ground, making the earth resound with their fall. These elephants, mountain-sized and like heaps of black collyrium, having fallen to the ground, looked like scattered mountain peaks. Yudhishthira, the great bowman, having engaged the king of Madra, protected by a great army, began to press him in battle. And the lord of Madra, valiant for Bhishma's sake, in fury pressed the son of Dharma, the great charioteer, in that battle. King Sindhava, having pierced Virata with nine sharp bent-jointed arrows, then again tormented him with thirty. And Virata, O great king, struck Sindhava with thirty sharp arrows in the chest, at the front of the army. Matsya and Sindhava, both of wondrous form, shone in the battle with their dappled bows and swords, their bright armor, weapons, and banners."

The scene holds together the vast and the personal: Bhima brings down elephants as Indra brings down mountains, while Yudhishthira, Shalya, Virata, and Jayadratha carry on their own duels for the sake of that same knot of battle -- Bhishma.
