सेनापतिस् तु समरे प्राह सेनां महारथः ॥
अभिद्रवत गाङ्गेयं सोमकाः सृञ्जयैः सह ॥
सेनापतिवचः श्रुत्वा सोमकाः सह सृञ्जयैः ॥
अभ्यद्रवन्त गाङ्गेयं शस्त्रवृष्ट्या समन्ततः ॥
वध्यमानस् ततो राजन् पिता शांतनवस् तव ॥
अमर्षवशम् आपन्नो योधयाम् आस सृञ्जयान् ॥
तस्य कीर्तिमतस् तात पुरा रामेण धीमता ॥
संप्रदत्तास्त्रशिक्षा वै परानीकविनाशिनी ॥
स तां शिक्षाम् अधिष्ठाय कृत्वा परबलक्षयम् ॥
अहन्य् अहनि पार्थानां वृद्धः कुरुपितामहः ॥
भीष्मो दश सहस्राणि जघान परवीरहा ॥
तस्मिंस् तु दिवसे प्राप्ते दशमे भरतर्षभ ॥
भीष्मेणैकेन मत्स्येषु पाञ्चालेषु च संयुगे ॥
गजाश्वम् अमितं हत्वा हताः सप्त महारथाः ॥
हत्वा पञ्च सहस्राणि रथिनां प्रपितामहः ॥
नराणां च महायुद्धे सहस्राणि चतुर्दश ॥
तथा दन्तिसहस्रं च हयानाम् अयुतं पुनः ॥
शिक्षाबलेन निहतं पित्रा तव विशां पते ॥
ततः सर्वमहीपानां क्षोभयित्वा वरूथिनीम् ॥
विराटस्य प्रियो भ्राता शतानीको निपातितः ॥
शतानीकं च समरे हत्वा भीष्मः प्रतापवान् ॥
सहस्राणि महाराज राज्ञां भल्लैर् न्यपातयत् ॥
ये च के चन पार्थानाम् अभियाता धनंजयम् ॥
राजानो भीष्मम् आसाद्य गतास् ते यमसादनम् ॥
एवं दश दिशो भीष्मः शरजालैः समन्ततः ॥
अतीत्य सेनां पार्थानाम् अवतस्थे चमूमुखे ॥
स कृत्वा सुमहत् कर्म तस्मिन् वै दशमे ऽहनि ॥
सेनयोर् अन्तरे तिष्ठन् प्रगृहीतशरासनः ॥

hatvā pañca sahasrāṇi rathināṃ prapitāmahaḥ ||
narāṇāṃ ca mahāyuddhe sahasrāṇi caturdaśa ||
tathā dantisahasraṃ ca hayānām ayutaṃ punaḥ ||
śikṣābalena nihataṃ pitrā tava viśāṃ pate ||
tataḥ sarvamahīpānāṃ kṣobhayitvā varūthinīm ||
virāṭasya priyo bhrātā śatānīko nipātitaḥ ||
śatānīkaṃ ca samare hatvā bhīṣmaḥ pratāpavān ||
sahasrāṇi mahārāja rājñāṃ bhallair nyapātayat ||
ye ca ke cana pārthānām abhiyātā dhanaṃjayam ||
rājāno bhīṣmam āsādya gatās te yamasādanam ||
evaṃ daśa diśo bhīṣmaḥ śarajālaiḥ samantataḥ ||
atītya senāṃ pārthānām avatasthe camūmukhe ||
sa kṛtvā sumahat karma tasmin vai daśame 'hani ||
senayor antare tiṣṭhan pragṛhītaśarāsanaḥ ||

अनुवाद

Then the commander, the great chariot-warrior, said to the army in battle: "Somakas, together with the Srinjayas, attack the son of Ganga!" Hearing the commander's word, the Somakas together with the Srinjayas rushed upon Bhishma from all sides with a shower of weapons. Struck by them, O king, your ancestor, the son of Shantanu, overcome with wrath, began to fight the Srinjayas. Long ago the wise Rama had given this renowned warrior the training in weapons that destroys enemy armies. Relying on that training, the aged grandfather of the Kurus, Bhishma, slayer of enemy heroes, destroyed the strength of the Parthas day after day and slew ten thousand warriors at a time. And when the tenth day arrived, O bull of the Bharatas, Bhishma alone in battle among the Matsyas and Panchalas, having slain countless elephants and horses, struck down seven great chariot-warriors. This elder of the line slew five thousand chariot-warriors, fourteen thousand foot soldiers in the great battle, a thousand elephants, and ten thousand more horses: all this was destroyed by your ancestor through the power of his warrior science, O lord of the people. Then, having shaken the army of all the kings of the earth, he struck down Shatanika, the beloved brother of Virata. Having slain Shatanika in battle, the valiant Bhishma, O great king, felled thousands of kings with his bhalla arrows. And whatever kings of the Parthas' side advanced toward Dhananjaya, all of them, upon encountering Bhishma, went to the abode of Yama. Thus Bhishma, covering the ten directions on every side with nets of arrows, passed through the army of the Parthas and took his stand at the front line. Having accomplished this great feat on that tenth day, he stood between the two armies with his bow raised."
