धृतराष्ट्र उवाच
शृणु दिव्यानि कर्माणि वासुदेवस्य संजय ॥
कृतवान् यानि गोविन्दो यथा नान्यः पुमान् क्व चित् ॥
संवर्धता गोपकुले बालेनैव महात्मना ॥
विख्यापितं बलं बाह्वोस् त्रिषु लोकेषु संजय ॥

अनुवाद
Listen to the divine deeds of Vasudeva [Krishna], O Sanjaya, which Govinda performed as no other man ever did anywhere. Growing up in a family of cowherds, still a child, the great-souled one manifested the strength of his arms in the three worlds, O Sanjaya.

Dhritarashtra begins his praise of Krishna, and the first thing he proclaims is that His deeds are such "as no other man ever performed anywhere." By this the Lord is already set apart from all mortals: His acts cannot be compared with human ones, for He is a man only in appearance. It is significant that He reveals divine power "still a child, in a family of cowherds": the Supreme descends in humility, concealing greatness beneath a veil of simplicity, and this very concealment is His pastime (lila). The verse teaches that the incomparability of His deeds discloses the divinity of the Doer; that the Lord manifests Himself where He is least expected — in the humble rather than the worldly-grand; and that hearing of His deeds with faith is the beginning of that glorification which heals even a heart of stone.
