सात्यकिः कृतवर्माणं नाराचेन स्तनान्तरे ॥
विद्ध्वा विव्याध सप्तत्या पुनर् अन्यैः स्मयन्न् इव ॥
सप्तसप्ततिभिर् भोजस् तं विद्ध्वा निशितैः शरैः ॥
नाकम्पयत शैनेयं शीघ्रो वायुर् इवाचलम् ॥
सेनापतिः सुशर्माणं शीघ्रं मर्मस्व् अताडयत् ॥
स चापि तं तोमरेण जत्रुदेशे अताडयत् ॥
वैकर्तनं तु समरे विराटः प्रत्यवारयत् ॥
सह मत्स्यैर् महावीर्यैस् तद् अद्भुतम् इवाभवत् ॥

sa cāpi taṃ tomareṇa jatrudeśe atāḍayat ||
vaikartanaṃ tu samare virāṭaḥ pratyavārayat ||
saha matsyair mahāvīryais tad adbhutam ivābhavat ||
Satyaki, having pierced Kritavarman with a solid-forged arrow into the middle of his chest, then struck him, as if with a smirk, with seventy other arrows. Bhoja [Kritavarman], having struck him [Satyaki] with seventy-seven sharp arrows, did not make Shaineya [Satyaki] tremble, as a swift gale does not shake a crag. The commander instantly wounded Sushaman in his vital points, and he in turn wounded him with a javelin in the collarbone. And Vaikartana [Karna] was driven back in battle by King Virata together with the mighty Matsyas — and this appeared as a veritable wonder.

The image of Satyaki, unmoved beneath seventy-seven arrows like a crag beneath a gale, shows supreme valor — a steadfastness nothing can shake. It is significant that Virata with the Matsyas 'drove back [none other than] Karna' — and this is called a 'wonder': the lesser overcomes the greater when truth lends it strength. The verse teaches that true firmness stands unmoved under a hail of blows, as a mountain under the wind; that even one less renowned, standing for the righteous cause, can drive back the celebrated; and that a 'wonder' appears in battle whenever the strength of truth overcomes the expected superiority of untruth.
