Fallen into great distress, I have come into utter confusion; having heard that Bhishma and Drona are slain, I am not able to live. What Vidura said to me, father, foreseeing me obsessed with my sons — all that, O narrator, has befallen me together with Duryodhana. But it would be inhuman in the highest degree if, forsaking Duryodhana, I were to think of saving my surviving sons; these present hardships are not yet death.

Dhritarashtra confesses: everything the wise Vidura foretold about his ruinous attachment to his sons has now come to pass. This is bitter insight — but too late: the warning was rejected in its own time. His anguish is telling: even now he cannot "abandon Duryodhana to save the others," for he would consider it inhuman. Thus the blind fatherly love that destroyed the family holds him captive even to the end. The verse teaches that true warnings from the wise, rejected out of partiality, inevitably come to pass; that attachment devoid of judgment blinds even in the face of ruin; and that there is a kind of "love" which, unable to say "no" to a wicked son, destroys both him and all who should have been protected — for indulging evil under the guise of love is the greatest of cruelties.
