संजय उवाच
यियासतस् ततः कृष्णः पार्थस्याश्वान् मनोजवान् ॥
अप्रैषीद् धेमसंछन्नान् द्रोणानीकाय पाण्डुरान् ॥
तं प्रयान्तं कुरुश्रेष्ठं स्वांस् त्रातुं द्रोणतापितान् ॥
सुशर्मा भ्रातृभिः सार्धं युद्धार्थी पृष्ठतो ऽन्वयात् ॥
saṃjaya uvāca
yiyāsatas tataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ pārthasyāśvān manojavān ||
apraiṣīd dhemasaṃchannān droṇānīkāya pāṇḍurān ||
taṃ prayāntaṃ kuruśreṣṭhaṃ svāṃs trātuṃ droṇatāpitān ||
suśarmā bhrātṛbhiḥ sārdhaṃ yuddhārthī pṛṣṭhato 'nvayāt ||
Then Krishna drove Partha's white horses, swift as thought, in their golden trappings, toward Drona's army -- Arjuna chafing to set out. As he moved off, the best of the Kurus, to save his own, tormented by Drona, Sushaman with his brothers, eager for a fight, set off after him in pursuit.

The moment Arjuna rushes to save his own from Drona, Sushaman again clings to his heels -- the bait will not let go of its prey. Here the enemy's plan reveals its persistence: to bind Arjuna, to keep him from reaching where he is most needed. It is telling that Arjuna's aim is "to save his own, tormented by Drona": what moves him is not thirst for battle but care for his kin. The verse teaches that a good impulse to help often meets an obstacle deliberately placed to distract it; that the enemy of one rushing to the rescue strains to hold him up midway; and that valor moved by love for one's own, not by intoxication with battle, must still overcome the barriers set in the very path of mercy.
