स तु नागो द्विपरथान् हयांश् चारुज्य मारिष ॥
प्राहिणोन् मृत्युलोकाय ततो ऽक्रुध्यद् धनंजयः ॥

But that elephant, O worthy one, trampling elephants, chariots, and horses, sent them to the world of death; then Dhananjaya became enraged.

Mercy turns into fresh loss: the elephant that Arjuna, faithful to dharma, refused to slay goes on at once to crush chariots, horses, and men, dispatching them "to the world of death." Only then does Arjuna's anger awaken. Here lies a fine distinction: the warrior honored the rule as long as he could, but when the spared beast continues to destroy the innocent, the duty to protect one's own takes precedence. It is significant that his anger is not for himself but for those destroyed. The verse teaches that mercy has a limit where the one spared continues to bring death; that fidelity to a single rule must not become permission for a greater evil; and that righteous anger, awakened by the death of those entrusted to one's protection, is lawful and holy, for the duty to preserve the living, in its hour, outweighs even courtesy toward a foe who has turned away.
