Then Arjuna, the master of weapons, displaying his own supremacy over his enemies, unleashed a flood of arrows upon the army of the Kauravas. That host of your son, struck down by Partha, split in two, O great sovereign, like the Ganga striking against a rock: some of the great chariot-warriors went there to Drona, O sovereign, others to Duryodhana, hard-pressed by the Diademed One.

The army, struck down by Arjuna, splits in two "like the Ganga against a rock": a single host breaks into two streams, each seeking refuge apart -- one with Drona, one with Duryodhana. This shows how the onslaught of a single, irresistible force can shatter the most closely-knit multitude. It is telling that they do not scatter at random but flee toward two leaders -- even in confusion, seeking shelter in someone senior. The verse teaches that the drive of one man who surpasses all can split a whole army as a rock cleaves a river; that even in flight people cling to their leaders, seeking protection; and that an army breaking apart, its parts seeking safety separately, is a sign of shattered unity -- a campaign split into branches has already lost the very wholeness that was its strength.
