सौभद्रचापप्रभवैर् निकृत्ताः परमेषुभिः ॥
स्वान् एवाभिमुखान् घ्नन्तः प्राद्रवञ् जीवितार्थिनः ॥
ते घोरा रौद्रकर्माणो विपाठाः पृथवः शिताः ॥
निघ्नन्तो रथनागाश्वाञ् जग्मुर् आशु वसुंधराम् ॥

अनुवाद
Hacked by the excellent arrows flying from Abhimanyu's bow, [the warriors], striking those before them who were their own, fled, desiring to save their lives. Those dread, horror-bringing, broad, large, sharp arrows, crushing chariots, elephants and horses, sped swiftly into the earth.

In their panic the warriors 'strike down their own who face them' -- fear turns their weapons against their own ranks: it is not the boy but the terror he sows that deals the greater harm. Thus it reveals itself that a disordered multitude destroys itself more surely than any foe. It is telling that the arrows, having pierced through everything, 'go into the earth' -- their force is not spent on the target. The verse teaches that fear in the ranks is more dangerous than the enemy's arrows, for it turns warriors against one another; that one man who sows panic destroys many by their own hands; and that the tale, depicting fleeing men striking down their own, exposes in panic the worst enemy of an army -- the one within, not the one without.
