पलाशैर् अरिमेदैश् च प्लक्षन्यग्रोधपिप्पलैः ॥
महद्भिः समरे तस्मिन्न् अन्योन्यम् अभिजघ्नतुः ॥
विविधैः पर्वताग्रैश् च नानाधातुभिर् आचितैः ॥
तेषां शब्दो महान् आसीद् वज्राणां भिद्यताम् इव ॥
युद्धं तद् अभवद् घोरं भैम्यलायुधयोर् नृप ॥
हरीन्द्रयोर् यथा राजन् वालिसुग्रीवयोः पुरा ॥
तौ युद्ध्वा विविधैर् घोरैर् आयुधैर् विशिखैस् तथा ॥
प्रगृह्य निशितौ खड्गाव् अन्योन्यम् अभिजघ्नतुः ॥

mahadbhiḥ samare tasminn anyonyam abhijaghnatuḥ ||
vividhaiḥ parvatāgraiś ca nānādhātubhir ācitaiḥ ||

yuddhaṃ tad abhavad ghoraṃ bhaimyalāyudhayor nṛpa ||
harīndrayor yathā rājan vālisugrīvayoḥ purā ||
tau yuddhvā vividhair ghorair āyudhair viśikhais tathā ||
pragṛhya niśitau khaḍgāv anyonyam abhijaghnatuḥ ||

The fight of Ghatotkacha and Alayudha is likened to the clash of Vali and Sugriva from the Ramayana: epic joins epic, this battle to that battle of old. This interweaving of legends is telling — a single fabric of the heroic world. The verse teaches that great deeds echo across the ages, and each new one resounds with those before it; and this duel on the night of Kurukshetra takes its place among the legendary clashes, gaining through the comparison its true measure and grandeur.
