संजय उवाच
हते घटोत्कचे राजन् कर्णेन निशि राक्षसे ॥
प्रणदत्सु च हृष्टेषु तावकेषु युयुत्सुषु ॥
आपतत्सु च वेगेन वध्यमाने बले ऽपि च ॥
विगाढायां रजन्यां च राजा दैन्यं परं गतः ॥
अब्रवीच् च महाबाहुर् भीमसेनं परंतपः ॥
आवारय महाबाहो धार्तराष्ट्रस्य वाहिनीम् ॥
हैडिम्बस्याभिघातेन मोहो माम् आविशन् महान् ॥
एवं भीमं समादिश्य स्वरथे समुपाविशत् ॥
अश्रुपूर्णमुखो राजा निःश्वसंश् च पुनः पुनः ॥
कश्मलं प्राविशद् घोरं दृष्ट्वा कर्णस्य विक्रमम् ॥

āvāraya mahābāho dhārtarāṣṭrasya vāhinīm ||
haiḍimbasyābhighātena moho mām āviśan mahān ||
evaṃ bhīmaṃ samādiśya svarathe samupāviśat ||
aśrupūrṇamukho rājā niḥśvasaṃś ca punaḥ punaḥ ||
kaśmalaṃ prāviśad ghoraṃ dṛṣṭvā karṇasya vikramam ||
When Ghatotkacha was slain, O king, by Karna in the night, [that] rakshasa, and when your men, straining for battle, exulted, shouting, and charged headlong, and while the army was being slaughtered, and in the dead of night, the king [Yudhishthira] fell into utmost despair. And the mighty-armed one said to Bhimasena, scorcher of foes: "Hold back, O mighty-armed one, the army of Dhartarashtra; by the slaying of the son of Hidimba a great faintness has overcome me." Having thus charged Bhima, he sank down onto his own chariot.

Yudhishthira, the king of steadfastness, falls into faintness from grief: even the strongest in spirit is not stone before loss. It is telling that he does not hide his weakness but plainly charges Bhima to hold the line. The verse teaches that even the strong can be broken by grief; and there is no shame in admitting it and passing the burden to another for a time of weakness -- for courage lies not in insensibility, but in not abandoning the task even while bent by sorrow.
