संजय उवाच
ततो दुर्योधनो द्रोणम् अभिगम्येदम् अब्रवीत् ॥
अमर्षवशम् आपन्नो जनयन् हर्षतेजसी ॥
न मर्षणीयाः संग्रामे विश्रमन्तः श्रमान्विताः ॥
सपत्ना ग्लानमनसो लब्धलक्ष्या विशेषतः ॥
तत् तु मर्षितम् अस्माभिर् भवतः प्रियकाम्यया ॥
त एते परिविश्रान्ताः पाण्डवा बलवत्तराः ॥
सर्वथा परिहीनाः स्म तेजसा च बलेन च ॥
भवता पाल्यमानास् ते विवर्धन्ते पुनः पुनः ॥

tato duryodhano droṇam abhigamyedam abravīt ||
amarṣavaśam āpanno janayan harṣatejasī ||
na marṣaṇīyāḥ saṃgrāme viśramantaḥ śramānvitāḥ ||
sapatnā glānamanaso labdhalakṣyā viśeṣataḥ ||
tat tu marṣitam asmābhir bhavataḥ priyakāmyayā ||
ta ete pariviśrāntāḥ pāṇḍavā balavattarāḥ ||
sarvathā parihīnāḥ sma tejasā ca balena ca ||
bhavatā pālyamānās te vivardhante punaḥ punaḥ ||
Then Duryodhana, approaching Drona, spoke thus, overcome with indignation, showing now joy, now wrath: "One must not tolerate in battle resting, weary rivals, worn out in spirit, especially those who have seized their chance. But that we tolerated from a wish to please you; these Pandavas, having rested, have grown stronger. In everything we are diminished -- both in fervor and in strength; protected by you, they grow again and again."

Duryodhana blames his teacher even for the respite granted to the enemy: he holds Arjuna's mercy against Drona. It is telling that malice cannot bear even brief nobility -- for it, any mercy shown to an enemy is treason. The verse teaches that an embittered heart sees weakness or betrayal in kindness; and one incapable of magnanimity condemns it in others too, for goodness is foreign to the very fabric of his soul.
