संजय उवाच
ते तथैव महाराज दंशिता रणमूर्धनि ॥
संध्यागतं सहस्रांशुम् आदित्यम् उपतस्थिरे ॥
उदिते तु सहस्रांशौ तप्तकाञ्चनसप्रभे ॥
प्रकाशितेषु लोकेषु पुनर् युद्धम् अवर्तत ॥
द्वंद्वानि यानि तत्रासन् संसक्तानि पुरोदयात् ॥
तान्य् एवाभ्युदिते सूर्ये समसज्जन्त भारत ॥
रथैर् हया हयैर् नागाः पादाताश् चापि कुञ्जरैः ॥
हया हयैः समाजग्मुः पादाताश् च पदातिभिः ॥
संसक्ताश् च वियुक्ताश् च योधाः संन्यपतन् रणे ॥

te tathaiva mahārāja daṃśitā raṇamūrdhani ||
saṃdhyāgataṃ sahasrāṃśum ādityam upatasthire ||
udite tu sahasrāṃśau taptakāñcanasaprabhe ||
prakāśiteṣu lokeṣu punar yuddham avartata ||
dvaṃdvāni yāni tatrāsan saṃsaktāni purodayāt ||
tāny evābhyudite sūrye samasajjanta bhārata ||
rathair hayā hayair nāgāḥ pādātāś cāpi kuñjaraiḥ ||
hayā hayaiḥ samājagmuḥ pādātāś ca padātibhiḥ ||
saṃsaktāś ca viyuktāś ca yodhāḥ saṃnyapatan raṇe ||
They likewise, O great king, in armor, in the forefront of battle, honored the thousand-rayed luminary that had come to dawn. When the thousand-rayed one arose, with the glow of molten gold, when the worlds were illumined, battle went on again. The duels that had been locked together even before sunrise — those very ones, when the sun arose, locked together anew, O Bharata. Chariots with horses, elephants with horses, and foot soldiers with elephants; horses met with horses, and foot soldiers with foot soldiers.

The warriors honor the rising sun — and at once resume the slaughter: a rite of light precedes a work of blood. It is telling that worship of the sun is performed before fresh bloodshed. The verse teaches that a man can join piety to cruelty without noticing the contradiction; and one who at dawn prays to the sun, and at sunrise kills his brother, shows how sundered the sacred and the criminal can be within human beings.
