...like groves of parijata, they shone, sprinkled with blood. Then Duryodhana, Karna, Drona, and Duhshasana locked in combat with the Pandavas — four chariots against four. Duryodhana, with his brother, locked in combat with the twins; with Vrikodara [Bhima] — the son of Radha [Karna]; and with the son of Bharadvaja [Drona] — Arjuna. That dreadful, great wonder all watched from every side — a superhuman collision of terrible bulls among warriors, and full of wondrous chariot-paths, full of wondrous chariots.

Bloodied warriors shine "like groves of parijata," the heavenly tree: blood is transmuted into the crimson of paradise. It is telling that right after this the duels of the greatest begin — a "superhuman collision." The verse teaches that the epic sees in battle both beauty and superhuman greatness; but this beauty is crimson with blood, and behind the splendid spectacle of heroes colliding stands the same death — lovely from afar, terrible up close.
