तथा द्रोणार्जुनौ चित्रम् अयुध्येतां महारथौ ॥
आचार्यशिष्यौ राजेन्द्र कृतप्रहरणौ युधि ॥
लघुसंधानयोगाभ्यां रथयोश् च रणेन च ॥
मोहयन्तौ मनुष्याणां चक्षूंषि च मनांसि च ॥
उपारमन्त ते सर्वे योधास्माकं परे तथा ॥
अदृष्टपूर्वं पश्यन्तस् तद् युद्धं गुरुशिष्ययोः ॥
विचित्रान् पृतनामध्ये रथमार्गान् उदीर्यतः ॥
अन्योन्यम् अपसव्यं च कर्तुं वीरौ तदैषतुः ॥
पराक्रमं तयोर् योधा ददृशुस् तं सुविस्मिताः ॥
tathā droṇārjunau citram ayudhyetāṃ mahārathau ||
ācāryaśiṣyau rājendra kṛtapraharaṇau yudhi ||
laghusaṃdhānayogābhyāṃ rathayoś ca raṇena ca ||
mohayantau manuṣyāṇāṃ cakṣūṃṣi ca manāṃsi ca ||
upāramanta te sarve yodhāsmākaṃ pare tathā ||
adṛṣṭapūrvaṃ paśyantas tad yuddhaṃ guruśiṣyayoḥ ||
vicitrān pṛtanāmadhye rathamārgān udīryataḥ ||
anyonyam apasavyaṃ ca kartuṃ vīrau tadaiṣatuḥ ||
parākramaṃ tayor yodhā dadṛśus taṃ suvismitāḥ ||
Thus Drona and Arjuna fought wondrously, great warriors, teacher and pupil, O lord of kings, both skilled in the strikes of battle. With swift nocking of arrows, with the maneuvering of chariots, and with their combat, they bewitched the eyes and minds of all who watched. All of them ceased fighting -- our warriors and the enemy's alike -- beholding this never-before-seen battle of teacher and pupil. Amid the host, raising wondrous paths for their chariots, the two heroes strove to outflank one another from the left.

The battle of teacher and pupil is so wondrous that both armies stop fighting, 'bewitched': the beauty of mastery overcomes enmity. It is telling that enemies together marvel at one and the same art. The verse teaches that perfection reconciles even opponents: before true mastery, strife falls silent, and warring sides become for a moment a single, awestruck audience; for the beauty of supreme skill belongs to everyone and stands above every side.
