नेमौ शक्यौ महेष्वासौ रणे क्षेपयितुं परैः ॥
इच्छमानौ पुनर् इमौ हन्येतां सामरं जगत् ॥
इत्य् अब्रुवन् महाराज दृष्ट्वा तौ पुरुषर्षभौ ॥
अन्तर्हितानि भूतानि प्रकाशानि च संघशः ॥
ततो द्रोणो ब्राह्मम् अस्त्रं प्रादुश्चक्रे महामतिः ॥
संतापयन् रणे पार्थं भूतान्य् अन्तर्हितानि च ॥
ततश् चचाल पृथिवी सपर्वतवनद्रुमा ॥
ववौ च विषमो वायुः सागराश् चापि चुक्षुभुः ॥
nemau śakyau maheṣvāsau raṇe kṣepayituṃ paraiḥ ||
icchamānau punar imau hanyetāṃ sāmaraṃ jagat ||
ity abruvan mahārāja dṛṣṭvā tau puruṣarṣabhau ||
antarhitāni bhūtāni prakāśāni ca saṃghaśaḥ ||
tato droṇo brāhmam astraṃ prāduścakre mahāmatiḥ ||
saṃtāpayan raṇe pārthaṃ bhūtāny antarhitāni ca ||
tataś cacāla pṛthivī saparvatavanadrumā ||
vavau ca viṣamo vāyuḥ sāgarāś cāpi cukṣubhuḥ ||
"These two mighty archers cannot be struck down in battle by any foe; should these two but wish it, they would slay the whole world together with its gods." So spoke, O great king, the beings both hidden and manifest, gathered in multitudes, as they beheld those two bulls among men. Then Drona, the wise one, revealed the weapon of Brahma, scorching Partha in battle and the unseen beings alike. Then the earth shook with its mountains, forests, and trees, an ill wind blew, and the oceans surged.

Drona resorts to the highest weapon, the weapon of Brahma, and the world shudders -- earth, wind, and sea. It is significant that this terrible weapon scorches not only Partha but the unseen witnesses as well. The verse teaches that the higher powers, once set in motion by human hands, shake the very foundations of the world; the strife of the great does not remain their private affair -- it stirs the earth, the winds, and the waters, for a might surpassing the human resounds through the whole of creation.
