अनुवाद
Vaiśvānara, whose sphere is waking, is the sound A, the first measure: from 'attaining' or from 'being first'. He who knows thus verily attains all desires and becomes the first.

The first correspondence: waking = A. Two justifications through a play of roots (Vedic etymology is not linguistics but contemplation): āpteḥ — "from attaining" (√āp): the sound "a" is the most open and all-pervading — it is contained in every sound, as waking is the common ground of all people (vaiśvānara — "the All-Man"!); ādimattvāt — "from being first" (ādi — a beginning): "a" is the first sound of the alphabet and the first thing an opened mouth produces; waking is the first item in any reckoning of states.
The fruit of the knowledge: āpnoti ha vai sarvān kāmān — "he attains all desires", ādiś ca bhavati — "and becomes the first". One who knows waking as the first measure of Oṁ lives his waking life differently: his day is not "the whole of reality" but the first syllable of the Name — pronounced and passing, open and initial. Such a day is given away without clinging — and therefore given entire: desires are attained most easily by the man who does not take the daylight world for the last one.
The refrain ya evaṁ veda — "he who knows thus" — is the seal of the Upaniṣadic school: knowledge of correspondences is not information but exercise: he who recognises A in waking and waking in A enters each morning into his day as into the first sound of a prayer.
